Yeah, I know I suck at writing, but I thought I'd try my hand at a short story.
The Shadow of Demons
By: James Paul Gibbs II
You know, I wasn't always like this. I haven't always been held within the confines of this cramped little cell. It was "his" fault! He made me like this! You may think that I am a mad man, but I can assure you, I am not. This all started two years ago while I was on my way home to England from America. I had noticed a shadowy figure following me, though I thought nothing of it at the time. I just lit my pipe and ran my soft, pale white hand through my curly brown locks, and continued to walk homeward. Little did I know that the malevolent dark shadow was following me. For some reason the creature lost interest in me around the 5th Street alley way and ceased it's persuit, so naturally, I continued my walk home. Finally I arrived at my destination, a small, quaint house at the edge of Brookers Avenue. The house was surrounded by a bright white picket fence, about knee high, and in the corner lay a perfect garden of crimson roses. There, bent next to one of the roe bushes was a beautiful young lass, her hair a heavenly blonde, her eyes a deep blue. She was about 5'6 and held to her a heavenly glow around her elegant dress. I took one last puff of my pipe and let the words effortlessly fall from my lips. "Hello my love, how are you this eve?" She lifted her head from the roses and with a soft, gentle voice replied, "I am fine dear Grant, how are you dearest?" While extinguishing my pipe, I had begun to tell her of my adventures in America, and the sites I had seen, her face grew tight with excitement. Her soft blue eyes had a look of amazement, as she stood from the spot she had resided before my arrival and accompanied me to the house.
Slowly we walked through the halls and retreated to the kitchen where we sat and chatted while enjoying our tea. I sat wearily gazing upon the old victorian furnishings and the old window that looked to the backyard. Suddenly a black figure raced by, I quickly jumped up and ran to the back door grabbing one of the black cains that rested in the umbrella rack beside it and raced out the back door after the creature. Much to my surprise,it had merely been my younger sibling Samuel De'Rafaifre. I shouted to him "Sammy my dear chap! What brings you to my humble home?" He quietly looked away. His dark green eyes shown a certain anxiety as he tried to avert his eyes from my gaze. His long raven black hair hung low and covered his contorted face. I then said to him in a rather confused manner, "My dear brother, what is the matter?" His eyes bore the expression of a man sentenced to the gallows as he retorted, "Nothing dear brother, I am just overwhelmingly happy to see you once more." I just shrugged and asked if he would like to join my wife and I for abit of afternoon tea, but Sammy was a rather shy fellow, and he smiled and declined as he usually did. I uttered a farewel as he waltzed out the back gate and raced down the alley to meet the trolly. I again retreated the the sanctuary of my home, and walked towards the kitchen, where my wife still sat sipping her tea. When I sat down, Angelina lifted her soft blue eyes to mine and asked who it was that had been at the window. So then I told her about Samuel while sipping my tea and she frowned, her head hung low with a certain guilt as she looked away, the same way Samuel did earlier. I stared deeply, and lovingly into her eyes and asked her what was wrong, the same way I had done to Samuel before. Yet just as Samuel, she pulled her eyes away in a guilty reproach and claimed that nothing was the matter. I pretended as if I thought nothing of the matter and smiled.
Within a months time my wife began to disappear with my brother, making up foolish excuses that no man in the right state of mid would believe. t was at that point a great spark had ignited in me, my suspicions grew, and with them, a plan. Finally, I devised an excellent plot to uncover the truth. With great haste, and quick thinking, in three days time, I transformed my attic into a place that would support a man for nigh 2 weeks. Though I had to remove countless numbers of boxes and old chests to another side of the attic, which of course made a great deal of noise, my wife had no idea of my plans.
The following day, I scurried to dearest Angelina and told her I was summoned to Middlesex on important business and I would take my leave at noon. She was led to believe I would not be back for days, which was to my advantage. It had been the first smile she had shown me in weeks, which sent a fierce jolt of anger through my body, which luckily escaped my face.
At noon I left, luggage in hand for the train station at Transon street. The shadow that had followed me home a month and a half ago
once again followed me, but as I had expected this, I boarded the train to ride to the station in the town of Crowsville. All the while my mind raced to think of what atrocities I would find, who was this mysterious shadow following me? Was it the one my wife was having an affair with? My teeth chattered and my fists clenched when suddenly a strong hand shook my shoulder and with a loud voice demanded, "Sir, I asked for your ticket!" It was merely that stationmaster checking the passengers for tickets, which I quickly handed him. Finally the train stopped in Crowsville where a taxi had already been waiting for me. I quickly tossed my belongings inside and hopped into my seat. The driver had recieved instructions prior to my leave and I was now bound for home. I had the taxi stop about 3 blocks from my home so no one would see me, paid him and quickly darted through the alleys till I reached my home. I unlached the back gate and hurried to the attic, where I stayed unnoticed. Later that night she had scurried into the house with a bag from the local market, I had assumed she was alone, but much to my surprise, my dear brother Samuel accompanied her.
I had guess he was just helping her with the groceries until I saw him bend down to give her a kiss. She quickly dropped the bag and lept into his arms, as they kissed fiercely and passionately. I was suddenly enraged, my anger had began to catch the best of me. I had just dropped down from my perch on the attic, to rush towards them, to do what I do not know when I saw a shadow appear before me. At it's sight I blacked out. As I was regaining conciousness, I heard unearthly howls in the far off distance, the very sound echoed inside my head. I shall never forget it, the sound of a banshees wail, Oh did it hurt!
When I finally regained my senses, I realized I now lay at the bottom of the steps, face down in a pool of blood. I looked up the steps and what I saw was so foul and horrid that it shall foever haunt my dreams. I had a knife clenched in my hand, though I know not where I had got it, and I hurled it at the shadowy beast, but it disappeared beneath the sound of breaking glass. I turned around to look for my wife, but before I could move three steps I had found her lying naked and nailed to a pentacle. Her body was covered in markings that appeared to be the lettering of some satanic language, and her flesh was riddled with knives. Through each breast lay a curved dagger, and between her legs was the hilt of my short sword, which had been savagely ripped from the wall, the blade had gone straight through her. Upon her bloody forhead was a large knot, and on that knot was an upside down cross engraved deep into her skin. Her killer had sewn her eyes and mouth shut with thick black lace and the finger which once hold our wedding ring had been savagely hacked off. There was so much blood.
My next thoughts were of my dear brother Samuel, had he escaped? Or was his fate worse? Tears began to fill my eyes whe my eyes met his corpse. Oh! The wails grew stronger, the drew nearer! "Make them stop! Make the howling stop!" I cried I had once again looked over my brothers corpse, he had been crucified to an upside down cross and impaled with the spear that had once laid quietly on my wall, though whatever else had been done to him I could not see, as his body was engulfed in a deep flame, and the rancid smell of burning flesh forced me to vomit upon the floor. When I had whiped my mouth clean of the vomit, a black book caught my eye, it lay on the floor, on the cover a giant red eye, the runes below it were made of an ivory I had not seen, and spelled, "The Demon's Eye", but how did a book such as this get within my possession? It must have been that cursed shadow! I then fell to the floor clutching my ears as the wailings were just outside my door. The demon! He must have returned for me! I had to run, but I could not move. My door had suddenly flew off it's hinges as a group of men flew into the room, on of which slammed his club into my head, and all went blank. I awoke the next day severely bruised. A man in what appeared to be an officer's uniform approached me. He looked me in the eye for a moment the struck my head harshly with his massive left hand. I managed to ask why I was here, and how I got here, but the guard shot me a fierce look and spat in my face. Another guard now approached me and told me of the monstrocity that had occured at my home, and accused me of being the one who committed the horrid crime. "It was not me" I pleaded. "It was the shadow! I saw him fleeing from the top of my steps! It was a demon I tell you! A demon! I hurled my knife at him!" The guards stared at me blankly and slowly told me, that my knife had struck the mirror that had stood on the wall by my steps.
They had me locked in here, this room, this prison. I swear I had not killed my wife, nor her lover.. My... Brother.
Why, oh why won't anyone believe me! It was the demon I tell you! The right hand of the devil himself! You foul demon! What have you done to me! It was not always like this, but the demon has ruined my life and condemned my soul to hell... One day I will escape this... Prison, and I will avenge my wife and brother's death!
