What colors would you use in this room?

What colors would you use in this room?

Post by Ladybee »

We're redoing our living room, and today we painted all the walls, woodwork, and the ceiling primer white. Now I need to figure out what colors to paint it for real, so I thought I'd solicit some input from the crafty folks. Here's the details:

Decorating theme: Opium den. Think rich warm colors, Indian and Nepalese fabrics, embroidered tapestries, exotic animal prints.

Here's what we already have to work with in terms of furnishings: orangey red crossweave raw silk drapes with a raspberry stripe, and a dark leopard fur couch with black and old-gold throw pillows. There's a reddish mahogany table supporting the TV/DVD/VCR, a blonde wood futon frame, a caramelly maple freestanding mirror, and a deep brownblack destroyed old steamer trunk for a coffeetable. The room is 6-sided, each wall a different size. The windows are 2 different sizes as well.

There's a photo of it here:

Well... I, personally, believe that all living rooms should be red... but in your case, I *really* think so. I would paint it a very dark rusty red. Something like Pantone 483 (I'm a graphic designer, not an interior designer). I would do the trim in a gold / yellow that matched the leopard skin sofa. If you're really adventurous put leopard spots on the trim.

I'd cover the steam trunk, or at least partially cover it, with some material that matched the red walls. I'm not entirely sure what I would do with the mirror or the futon frame. Maybe paint them a darker color.

And this is the most important thing of all:

That mahogany table sounds fine, but it's *way* too cluttered with stuff. I'd send all of the equipment to me... I'll PM you with my address
The firemen came and broke through the chimney top. And me and Mom were expecting them to pull out a dead cat or a bird. And instead they pulled out my father. He was dressed in a Santa Claus suit. He'd been climbing down the chimney... his arms loaded with presents. He was gonna surprise us. He slipped and broke his neck. He died instantly. And that's how I found out there was no Santa Claus.

A nice dark red or the color of fresh baked bread!
May your dreams be the future you could have had, and your nightmares be the realization that you destroyed your chance to make it reality.

Sepia, maybe - rather than rust - but then I *hate* rust color!
LOL

Could we see a picture of the accessories - the drapes and pillows and whatnot?

Even better - go here, play aound until you match your colors, copy image location (url), and post the color blocks here as images...
So we all know exactly what colors you mean.
