I was just watching Ted Koppel talk about the blackout and this guy was on, sorta giving him a hard time and kept saying to go to http://www.thankyoufortakingmycall.com. Now I see it was all a prank, and its based in Chattanooga. How cool. I think harmless pranks are funny...

Thanks Buttah- I haven't heard from them but I'm sure they're fine. The phones are all working from what I gather- I'd have gotten a call if something happened.

We found out about it while dialing away at work. The reps were a bit alarmed, but contacts told us what had happened and why. Still, I'm sure we pissed off some folks, though we tried to be as apologetic as possible. :-?

I kept telling the reps that they'd be pissed too if someone killed their air conditioning today!

My favorite quotes thus far:

ConED - "We think it started in a sight in Canada"

News Guy - " There is a ConEd plant on fire!" (this is NOT news)

NY Gov. - " It's NOT terrorists....everything is fine" (except for the whole loss of power thing)

Canadian PM - " There was a lightning strike at a Canadian Plant...." (*rainman voice*....nyeah....definitely a lightning strike)

NY power and light guy - "...all that smoke and fire at the ConEd
plant is just a result of their shutdown process (how comforting)"

Canadian power and light guy - " Our Prime Minister is mistaken, there was no lightning strike. I heard that there was a ConEd plant on fire."

NY Gov - "...so far as I can tell, no one is certain as to the cause. We are just going to focus on getting the power back on as soon as possible and then determine the cause." ( You call that a plan!?)

I figure that is whats taking them so long to fix it. Here is how the scenario plays in my head:

"OK, Try it ."
*click* HUMMMMMM...
"Power is up!"
*POW!!!*
"Power is down."
"Damn!"
"OK, Try it again."
*click* HUMMMMMM...
"Power is up again!"
*POW!!!*
"Power is down again."
"Damn!"
.........
"Hey, Ya know? Maybe we should try to figure out why the power is going down....Fix it...and then try it."
"Can do that...Governor's orders..."
"Oh?........Ok...."

*15 minutes goes by*

"OK, Try it now."
*click* HUMMMMMM...
"Power is up again!"
*POW!!!*
"Power is down again."
"Damn it!"

News reporter - "So....any idea when the power will be back on?"
NY Gov - "No......it won't be any time in the next hour though." (DUH!)

The thing I find interesting is which services didnt have back up generators or simply were afected by this, 9 nuclear power plants shutdown (????couldnt be because they lost power they are the power???) Coal miners trapped due to no power (okay just for saftey you should have back up power) but theres an irony there, None of the police stations had backup, etc etc,. This morning they had reactions from overseas industrial nations who were preplexed as to why all the big buildings backup generators didnt kick in (they dont exist), Sorry for the rant, but your walking along thinking "nowhere else can be as messed up as were I am now. Doh! I guess everywhere is as bad, no escape."

I think it was a large pulse detonation. Knocks everything out for miles.

But, of course, it *wasn't* terrorism.

It might be due to that new worm that is going around causing computers to reboot..... it's kinda odd that this stuff started happening after the report was made of the worm.

But i don't know why that thing isn't caught by virus protection, i mean i've got the C++ and the VB coding for the damn thing in my textbooks on the shelf behind me.... go figure. :shrug:
