Such an upbeat crowd lol... I'm a bit unsure if you are talking about a specefic person or movement.
My take on it this hot hungover afternoon is the art of Matthew Barney, as stated by aural fixation in another post.

I feel that work dealing with the Body and it's different transformations, passing from life to death and all of the beauty and gore inbetween, is the current theme of artist in the forefront. Figurative work ior body modification is nothing new, However as we are moving into an age of body modification technology it would only make sense to make art about it.
examples would include Matthew Barney, Cindy Sherman, Joel Peter Witkin, and in my book however on the fringes Dave Mckean

The things you can't remember tells the things you can't forget
I met Dave McKean last year at World Fantasy. Friendly guy, though very shy, and he hung around the lobby playing piano for us from time to time during the weekend. If I had the server space for it I'd post some pics of him doing just that...
One of my pictures from WFC that's in the January 2003 Locus is of him and Neil Gaiman at the Punch & Judy Show there, holding a copy of Mr. Punch.
Part of the programming was an overview of his work - including his films. OMG. I had to leave the room a few times because of overload. He's the sort of artist that sets your own creative wheels burning rubber down the sidewalk and I can't give higher praise than that.

I totaly dig Dave Mckean's work would love to see one of his films didn't even know he worked on films. Guess it makes sense though, I would imageine he's done some music video's then.

conceptualism has dominated the art scene for the past decade or so but i think it is in decline and we are comming into in a post conceptualist era. alot of work currently has much to do with symmiotics <-that is soo not how that is spelled) and I think that it will be a dominating force behind contemporary art. Creamaster used symiotic theory to an amazing degree. pt 3 is an instantce that sticks out in my mind the most as an example of this, with the symbols for the Masons being used to illustrate the condition of both high and low classes. the "cremmaster shape" (anyone who saw it knows what im talking about) is another brilliant use of reptitive symmiotics. damion hurst, dino and jake chapman allong with the other Sinsation artists comming out of UK also employ it in their work but i dont think it has yet reached its full potiential. most of them only use it as an impliment of shock i think well see artists subtaly manipulating the thought processes of the veiwer in even more interesting ways in the comming decade......................

Yeah, I'm pretty ignorant of all the terms and stuff. I think I •might• be able to identify "Abstract" and "Realism". I just play untiil I get something I really like, myself.
As for other people's work, it's either interesting, or not. The best stuff makes me itch to go home and work on something.
