EVERYBODY: Get a defensive software program such as BlackIce
EVERYBODY: Get a defensive software program such as BlackIce
Wow, you just would not believe how often your computer is getting scanned for vulnerable ports.
I suggest Black Ice, a very easy to use piece of software that protects against intrusive acts and warns you of when they occur, complete with the IP that was used.

Black Ice isn't "hack-proof" - nothing is, really - but 99.9% of everyone using a computer only needs to worry about mass port scanning, which Black Ice will completely and easily deal with.
It did, in the past, have a couple small vulnerabilities, but they've been fixed in the latest releases.
The free firewalls are mostly just about as good, but with them, it is much more likely that any newfound security gap won't be fixed nearly as quickly. When most people don't pay for your product, you tend to have less people and time to fix it.
And of course none of them are as good as a "real" firewall, but almost nobody truly needs that level of security, unless you have a lot of hackers and script kids pissed off at you.

zonealarm is a great firewall and it's free
zonealarm contains spyware and im pretty sure it has a few holes its self. As stated previously there is no such thing as %100 security. If you have critical data its best to keep it on a computer not connected to the internet. and as always back up back up and back up again.

I'm going to agree with Div, here.
Hardware really is the best way to go for most people. The software firewalls add processor overhead, and unless they're built into the operating system (like the Mac OS X firewall) they tend to make your computer crash more.
And, yes, you're getting port scanned - but unless something is answering the requests, those scans are pretty damn close to zero risk. Don't run unneeded servers and you won't have a problem. Of course, if you're using a badly designed operating system like windoze, there's a decent chance you're going to have issues because some servers are active by default.
If you don't know what you're doing, though, any firewall will just give you a false sense of security, give you annoying and useless information, and make it more difficult for you to use your computer.
As always, the only way to make sure your computer will not be hacked is to permanantly disconnect it from all networks, put it in a deep underground reinforced concrete bunker, and surround it with many heavily armed guards.

We are all atheists about most of the gods that humanity has ever believed in. Some of us just go one god further.

And girls. That'll throw 'em off!
Girls, with guns, who are on their period..
