NY Mayor Charged For Performing 19 Same-Sex Marriages
New Paltz, NY Mayor Jason West has been charged for marrying same sex couples. Admittedly, none of them had marriage licenses, but still,..

I can't believe they are charging him for that. That's horrible. He does something that brings such joy to the couples, and he gets treated like a common criminal. It makes me sick.
May your dreams be the future you could have had, and your nightmares be the realization that you destroyed your chance to make it reality.

What is a NY MAJOR?
Teehee... grammar nazi's attack their own... news at eleven...
Well, she's saying NY MAYOR. And it would be 'an'.
More Nazi attacks!
Anyway, good for him. We need this kind of lawbreaking. You know, the kind that goes against discrimination.

What? No it wouldn't. "An mayor"? "An New York Mayor"? Huh? In the original heading it said MAJOR. Geesh.
Besides, I was really expecting JaNell to catch the apostrophe bit, but she was beaten to it. We like to play this game. However, she thwarted my evil plan by changing the header. Mwhahaha.
Moving right along...
Sure, I'll try to be nicer, if you try to be smarter.

HA-ha. Neener neener.
Anywho, forgive him. His English has been... neglected. I'll be fixing that.
Seaneleth wrote:Not yet. 'A NY' does not look right. Now, I thought you were using it as an acronym. In that case, 'an' is the right word. Also, I did not notice that it had been edited.
Actually, you have a point! If it's being pronounced as "en why", as opposed to "New York", it might be an "an" rather than an "a". Hmmm...
Is there a standard for acronyms? Do we go by the sound of the acronym, or by the sound of the words that the initials represent?

Ahhhhhhhh...
I get it now. OK, according to Harbrace, if 'an' is used before an abbreviation, it is dependent upon how the abbreviation is meant to be read. So, essentially, it’s a trick of the eye. For example, when we see NATO, we tend to read it as a word “nato” instead of N-A-T-O. It sounded right to me to use “a” because when we read the abbreviations for states, especially in the news, we automatically read the state’s name. If you were to see “blah blah blah happened in Orlando, FL last week,” you probably would read that as Florida, and not “blah blah blah happened in Orlando, F-L last week.”
But I see where you were going now, Seaneleth, and that’s a great question. So, what was this thread about again, JaNell? I think we ran this train straight off the tracks. I know, I know, I started it.
Sure, I'll try to be nicer, if you try to be smarter.
