Midnight Sushi in the future

Post by Scorptrio »

At the last midnight sushi at Tomo, there was some unintended behavior which was very rude. It was a grave breach of Japanese manners and disrespectful of their culture. I was very embarrassed by the way these people acted and I hope none of the Japanese waiters or hosts saw it, as I'm sure they would have been greatly offended. It wouldn't have been so bad if the people had stopped when they were informed of their bad manners, but they didn't. Let's have a little courtesy toward the culture which provides us with the artistic food we love so much. Being more polite is something all of us can improve on, especially if it involves an affront to an entire culture.

Bad manners:
· Waving chopsticks above food dishes.
· Sticking chopsticks into food instead of picking them up.
· Picking up a cup/bowl with the hand that is holding your chopsticks.
· Sucking chopsticks.
· Sticking chopsticks vertically into a bowl of rice.
· Passing food from your chopsticks to somebody else's chopsticks.
· It's impolite to hold chopsticks with five fingers in Japan.

Passing a piece of food directly from one set of chop sticks to another: The use of chopsticks in this manner resembles the way that they are used to pass the bones of a cremated body and therefore, this manner of using chopsticks in connection with food should be avoided.

I don't like Japanese food, which works out since I wouldn't have a clue how to enjoy it correctly.

I'd imagine that there'd be some degree of tolerance towards the ignorant Americans who keep buying their products, though. Hopefully, anyway! ;)

Amatsu Mikaboshi, the "august star of heaven," is the god of
evil and is also known as Ama-no-Kagaseo, the "brilliant male".

Why thank for you for the compliment

I'm pretty sure that most of the people who work at tomo...are probably american born japanese people. I could be wrong about that...but they speak pretty clean english.

Yes, you should respect other people's cultures, but I seriously doubt anyone was horribly offended if they even noticed at all.

In Japan, maybe....but not sushi etiquette in Ktown prolly isn't widely practiced by the masses.

Good point.

Another good point.

Also, I'd imagine they've seen a fuck of a lot worse than what I saw go on at Tomo's.

On the flip side, keeping another culture's traditions in mind isn't a Bad Thing™.

In Buttercup's link, I found this

"Never smoke in a sushi bar, it obscures the delicate flavours of the fish for everyone else. Ashtrays will likely be provided in many sushi bars (especially in Europe and America) but to use them is dismissive of the efforts of the chef."

Sooo, I think almost everyone who went, is guilty of that one. Lol

When possible, I've moved to another table or stepped outside to smoke. In the future, I'll be sure to step outside every time. Thanks for your input! I knew this would be an interesting topic and would enlighten how we can all improve ourselves.

I only went to sushi once (so far) BUT I did notice that Scorptrio always went outside to smoke that night. There may have been others that went outside too, but I only noticed him getting up because I was sitting next to him.

Normally, unless the smoking area is isolated from the sushi bar, I would go outside to smoke at a sushi restaurant, and would never actually smoke at the sushi bar itself.

I'm afraid I succumbed to a bit of monkey see monkey do since there were about 20 smokers aboot. I did however, smoke outside as people around me were being served.

Well, if they have a problem with it personally, perhaps they should have it be a no smoking restaurant. I do appreciate it when you all go smoke outside though....

I'm one of those anal people who would love for every public place, bars, restaurants, etc to be non-smoking. I love going to shows at the Orange Peel in Asheville because I can actually watch and enjoy a show without my eyes burning, my throat hurting or my clothing smelling like ass when I leave. Every time I go to BlueCats or Fairbanks, those things bother me.

I also appreciate it when people don't light up as I'm eating...man that pisses me off.

I'm all for everyones right to smoke, but if you want to kill yourself, I shouldn't have to deal with the effects of it.

I only feel the steel of the red hot truth

Post by Scorptrio »

It was my purpose in posting this thread to show how everyone's behavior might be taken as rude by someone and that the rudeness is usually unintentional. I also hoped to hold up a mirror for those who were accusing others of being rude, to show that no one has the moral high ground in this area. Personally I don't care if someone farts in the miso, as long as they don't jump on someone else for something similar. I'll take honest rudeness over hypocritical judgment any day of the week.

In the 15 months I've been hanging out with this scene, I've been told a lot of things about a lot of people. I have always extended the benefit of the doubt, choosing to wait to see if the described behavior manifests or not. I'm not your judge and you're not mine. Those of you who have been acting judgmental toward me recently fall into two groups: those who know me, actually do care, and just didn't know what was going on with me recently, and those who based their judgments on rumour, hearsay and outright lies which have been told about me. I've come to the realization that in the past year, most if not everything I've joked about, said in sarcasm or irony, in jest or as a friendly jibe or battle of wits has been taken seriously. This in itself would be hilarious if it weren't so tragic. People have always tried to convince me that I'm upset when I'm only being theatrical, which ironically upsets me.

If I've offended you, please come to me, tell me so. Let's talk it out and find out where the root of the problem is and see if we can resolve it and regain respect. If you're judging me and talking behind my back and have not come to me to try to understand where the problem is, then look in the mirror. If you've been "tolerating" me or putting up a pretense at friendship, stop it! Tell me your truth to my face. All my masks are at the cleaners. Take off yours and reveal yourself to me if you can. One good thing about all the recent hullabaloo is that your true characters have been revealed and I can stop giving the benefit of the doubt where there is no doubt any longer. Trees are known by the fruit they bear and time will tell.

To those of you who have been compassionate, kind, understanding and given me the benefit of the doubt, thank you very much - you mean the world to me and you proved to be true friends when I needed them the most. To those of you who have been drawn into this drama without having anything to do with the incidents, I'm sorry that you were and ask that you please consider the source of what you've been told and seek the other sides of the issues so as to have a more balanced outlook on the situation. If you want to know what's going on, the reason for my behavior so to speak, I will only say here that it's very personal and difficult and you're welcome to ask me in private and I will be, as always, honest.

And now for the hard part…

I've been wrong about a lot of things lately. I've acted badly. I've let pain and anger and other emotions show when I should have been in control of them instead of acting on them. I've been rude and offended people. I failed to take other people's feelings into account and didn't treat them with enough respect. I've wrongly assumed that people would know when I was joking about something and wasn't really putting them down. I've been acting arrogant and wrongly so. I've been self-centered and haven't thought about how my actions were being perceived. For all this and much more, I apologize to all of you and ask for your forgiveness. If you still have any respect for me after all this, then please contact me and let's reconcile and both know where we stand with each other. Thank you.

The heart never speaks but you must listen to know

Post by Scorptrio »

Truth Of The Heart
(M. Etheridge, J. Shanks)

I hear your questions
I see your face
Your life before you
Is full of grace
What can I tell you
To let you know
Your angel's eyes
Will watch you grow

Come listen close
And I'll try
I'll try to let you know
It's all I know

There is no magic
There are no secrets
We all begin this race at the start
But I have come this far
With a truth of the heart

Deep down inside
I think we're all the same
Try not to judge someone
And never shame
I do believe that people are good
They just want hope and respect
And to be understood

Sometimes it's hard sometimes it's strange
But the truth of the heart is people can change

There is no magic
There are no secrets
We all begin this race at the start
But I have come this far
With a truth of the heart

Yes there is danger and there are shadows
And there is fear inside the dark
It has powered countries and borne religion
But fear can never rule the heart

My father's burden
My mother's rain
My own desire
My sister's pain
All souls have traveled along this road
Each one has carried their own heavy load

But I have come this far
There is no magic
There are no secrets
We all begin this race from the start
And I have come this far
That's all I know that
I have come this far
I have come this far
With a truth of the heart

Find it in your heart

:-? Okay, I'm confused. I dunno what this thread is about anymore.

But, if there's drama involved-KEEP IT AWAY FROM ME! I don't want any kind of drama in my life anymore! :-x
