Sounds like a thread idea to me.

Don't even get that started! We'll be here all day discussing the finer points of stuffing one of your band mates into a base drum case and loading him under the bus!

band camp...

Post by moonstone84 »

And this one time at band camp...

yeah - i was in marching band too (is that a sport!?!). it was evil. but, i think that the senior percussionists making the frosh percs jump into a garbage dumpster to retrieve a set of (seperated) bocce balls is on an entirely different level of the yearly football hazings they did at my high school.

those normally involved liberal amounts of icy-hot applied to underwear...

No, that is not a sport!

Let's see, dumping entire boxes of Tide and food coloring into the fountains at local colleges where we were having band camp. Playing Jimi Hendrix' version of the Star Spangled Banner in the hallway of the dorm we were staying in as loud as we could get the stereo to go at 4:00 am. Getting busted for bringing pints of liquor on my senior band trip because some dumb ass freshman put the bottle on the edge of the balcony and it fell off just as the band director walked by. Duct taping a kid to a chair, locking him in the instrument room and leaving him for about 3 hours in the dark. Talking a kid into lighting his farts and him burning all the hair off his ass, not to mention his balls (that one is from my brother). Make out sessions on the bus back from a ball game. Hand check!! Does anyone remember that?

If I really sat down and thought about it, I could go on for hours. Just let it suffice to say that my brother and I were evil band kids and did whatever we could without getting caught. That was probably the most fun I had in high school.

And, yes, I played percussion, too. I'd like to see a football player carry a 45 pound set of drums for a mile and a half during a parade, while wearing a wool uniform, in either 95 degree weather with the sweat running into your eyes or in below freezing weather, with your hands so cold you can't feel the sticks, while marching in step and playing at the same time.

They can't do it, so there! (Yes, I just released the inner band geek!)

oh - you got to stay over night. ours were 8AM-5PM at the high school... our school was small/poor and the kids were needed to help out on their farms...

i did, however, get to see my band director throw a chair at the principal and learned some new words when the football coach came and told him he couldn't practice on the football field b/c it would mess up the turf ^_*...

::sigh:: i miss the snowy september friday nights freezing my arse off on aluminium bleachers....

and...
I'd like to see a football player carry a 45 pound set of drums for a mile and a half during a parade,

i'ld like to see a football player march and play winds on crutches. i couldn't either, but my director tried to convince me i could.... i guess i was a wimp, not wanting to drop the instument ...

On the what i would like to see front. I would like to see a band geek endure 2 aday practices in the summer in full football gear I dont think they could do it just like the marching band football for some is a year round thing.

that actually shocks me, to a point. if i remember correctly, and he hasn't done a 180, daniel's a tai chi fanatic. myself, i could only stand doing the 24 step form. meditation was (and still is) cool by me - to me, it's like crack, but more addictive. same with i chin ching, and iron bone.

unfortunately, i'm a hopeless result of the video game generation. low attention span, with few exceptions (i.e., i chin ching, meditation, and iron bone). i'll never knock tai chi, don't get me wrong, but i'm an impatient american. anything beyond 24 steps at true tai chi speed, and i get the jitters.

'course, maybe it's too much coffee.

as far as painful stances go... i'd love to lie to you, but as long as you're pushing yourself, it's never going to get easier.

after awhile you'll hit the point when 3 minutes in a horse stance is fine by you. then they'll put a weight vest on you, and it's like you've went back to square one, and are huffing, puffing, and shaking after 45 seconds.

but damn, will you have killer legs after you work back up to 3 minutes.

I would be delighted to sit and discuss this with you sometime. Hell, I'll even buy you a beer!

i'll hold you to it. make junkie introduce you. i'm fairly sure that he can recognize me in a crowd like temple or sanctus by now.

no real flack, and i'll agree with you on the showmanship part.

ok, i lied.

better athletes? i might not be a 'wrassler', but i know you're blowing smoke here - you know as well as i that it's entirely dependant the athlete in question. i've heard you and X go off about crappy wrestlers enough.

that flack enough? :D

oh, and football gear is lightweight.

That's OK, JC, I think I know who you are by sight. If I don't, Scarlet certainly does.

And, Ibbie, Sifu Daniel hasn't done a 180. He's still the Tai Chi man. I haven't started taking it because I don't have the patience yet!

Football gear is light. I'm talking about all day, with the exception of lunch and dinner, carrying around 45 pounds of drums all day when you only weigh in at 115 yourself. I'm not saying football players aren't tough, I'm just saying that the band "geeks" are a helluva lot tougher than you think!

if you want to talk about it at length, i'm not going anywhere.

I'm not offended by any of it. I'm just happy to see that you aren't another one of those practitioners that's in it just to be a "bad ass".

As for conversation, unfortunately I am not in K'town too often, being that I live and work in Nashvegas. Perhaps I will be able to spin a Sanctus or Temple sometime soon, after the finances settle down after my wedding and various other money sinking events.

hey, that's great. if and when you finally get your ass in this area, post on the board. in big letters, in general or dumpster, because i'm slow sometimes. i'd be glad to shoot the shit with you.

frankly, when i joined my school, i left my 'bad ass' ticket at home. good thing, too, because master kevin, his brother, and especially his father m ight've put a dent in my forehead that wouldn't go away. a big one. they aren't the types to put up with that crap.

that doesn't mean i'm not an elitist bastard. i am all nazi about making sure an art doesn't die because of american idiocy and laziness. and sometimes i'll come across as an asshole - especially on the internet, where a thousand physical nuances of conversation are lost - because of it. just like anyone else who cares a lot about something. but like i said, i'd be glad to discuss it with you or anyone over a few brews.

silent huntress wrote:And, Ibbie, Sifu Daniel hasn't done a 180. He's still the Tai Chi man. I haven't started taking it because I don't have the patience yet!

i didn't think daniel would. i opted out of testing in tai chi, but i came early to watch him when they first started that - testing, i mean. even though we were in the same class, between him and rob i still picked up a lot. like i said, i'm just not a tai chi person. that's the beauty of what they're teaching though - there's something for everyone.

junkie wrote:plus i dunno the person im supposed to introduce to you.

you're supposed to introduce huntress to myself, since she's going to the same goddamn school that i've ranted at you half a billion hours thus far, and even better, is taking lessons from a friend of mine who has uber skills at wrote memorization. in fact, the person she's learning from is one of the people i've recommended to you.

-primarily for jc- he's a really, really nice guy. don't let that fool you. he can kick your ass. trust me on this.

You definitely have to leave the bad ass attitude at the door. If you don't, they'll work it out of you. By the time Daniel got done with us last night, I was ready to pass out or throw up. Couldn't figure out which one. But this morning, I feel like I could take on the world.

JC, I'm Scarlet's "goth mom". I know you know her. She's also taking from Sifu Daniel. We are planning on coming to Temple for What is Fetish, so perhaps we can get together then.

Iblis, PM me and tell me your name. I have class again tomorrow night and would love to spring that on Sifu Daniel. And you're right, he's one of the nicest guys I've ever met, but I wouldn't want to take him on for anything. He's one of the best I've seen and he can kick your ass with very little effort on his part. :D

I always round up. i sometimes do 50 or 60 i chin ching, just because i can't count in my head - without a computer right next to me - worth a shit. ask rob from rogersville, he'll verify that.)

I'm pretty sure it's 49. I vaugely remember a 7 times 7 for meditation. Then they would do mutiple meditations spanning upwards of eight hours. (sympathy lactic acid is building up in my muscles, just thinking about it!)

I'm not sure if JC knows me..........
I mean, if you account achocol haze. :) kidding.

anyways, I'd like to meet you all. If Huntie comes out, I'm usually attached at the hip. If you remember faces, my pic is in my siggie. (in the link) Not a fantastic photo, but it didn't break the camera. :-)

My thoughts on sports:
For the most part I could care less. However for the ones I like heres why:

Baseball, Basketball, Golf, Bowling, Tennis, Football, Soccer, ect - Sports I pretty much don't care for all require but a single ball to play.
Now Motorcycle racing (Which I LOVE) requires two, perferably big brass ones.

In short if the sport doesn't require two balls to play, I'm probably not intrested in watching (unless of course it somehow involves boobies).
