Goth Tango Anyone...

Post by Francesca »

As some of you know, one of my pastimes is Argentine Tango... I've only been studying since November, and I saw something at a workshop this weekend that set my mind to thinking an idea I had might acutally be workable.

During a break in the workshop Sunday, the instructors put on "Hells Bells" by AC/DC and danced tango to it.

It was absolutely amazing...and confirmed that yes as long as the music timing is right, (4x4 time) you can dance tango to it.

Did some more research - and found there is actually a Goth Tango group in San Francisco... Also Dita Von Teese is into it as well (Burlesque performer who married Marilyn Manson).

This is their link:
http://www.sfgoth.com/~rain/tango.html

I'd really like to get the same thing going here in Knoxville: If we can get several interested people (any combination of men and women as you can dance MM WW or MW. ) who can learn enough over several months that maybe we can practice enough on our own to put together a choreographed piece to perform at a future Temple... or find a bar or coffeehouse and tango there weekly to goth music. Even if we can't get an entire group up, if anyone wants to take lessons with me where I go I'd be happy to help get you started.

The group lessons are $10 for one person or $15 for a couple, and are currently on Thursday nights from 7-8PM at Dance Dimensions in the back of a building on the corner of Kingston Pike and Gallaher view road.

It's a pain to get into the building parking lot so email or pm me for more detailed directions and I'll be happy to answer any questions you have. We may be trying to rent the square dance center in the near future but that is in the talking stage.

Here is the website for the Knoxville Argentine Tango Society that holds the lessons noted above:

I'm cross posting this message to both KnoxGothic and the Temple Forums... If you know someone not on this list who may interested please feel free to forward my contact info to them.

I would be interested, but I have no available time right now.

Please, edit your post and remove your phone number. Tell people to PM you instead to get it. One of the global mods will do it if you don't.

i would absolutely love to do this..my husband and i have been taking dance lessons now and then..but really want to get into the latin breed of dance. My only issue is, like everyone, im sure..time. I live in gatlinburg and it can take an hour just to get to knoxville..blerg.
add (edit: i typed ass..the hell?..damn im tired) in 2 kids, t-ball, karate, etc..and yeah it gets hairy..but maybe it would be doable..ill try to catch up with you on it.

Here are some Nashville Tango Links:

Tango Nashville:
http://www.tangonashville.com/

Here's an article on some of their current activities:
http://wsmv.com/Global/story.asp?S=4468581

Here is an excerpt from that article (in case the link above becomes no longer valid at a later date):

If you want to get off the exercise treadmill, Tango Nashville instructors say they can teach you the basics in six weeks.

Tango Nashville kicked off their 2006 class schedule on January 10 with a 6-week intensive and personalized Beginner Argentine Tango class at Nashville Ballet's Main Campus. Classes are held on Tuesdays from 7 to 8:30pm and run until February 14. The cost of all six sessions was $90, but classes are prorated for those starting at a later dater.

To register, contact Karen Malkin at kmalkin@nashvilleballet.com or 615-297-2966, ext. 20.

Intermediate/Advanced classes will be held at Vanderbilt's Sarratt Dance Center on Mondays from 8:30 to 9:30pm. Classes started January 16.

Here are some flickr photos of their troupe in action:

And to get you familiar with some terminology, here is a really good link off the knoxtango website on

Argentine Tango Dancing Instruction:
http://home.att.net/~larrydla/basics_0.html

If you read this before going to your first classes, it will free more space in your head to focus on the movements and execute them more efficiently. This can be a money saver as it will get you to an intermediate level more quickly.

Ooh, that sounds quite lovely. :) I have always been a fan of tango and finding someone so open to using different, non-traditional music is always fun. I will certainly love any information on how to attend.
