I enjoy project pitchfork for their ability to talk about issues we don't really want to think about, and I think that's what makes this song so sad, it's about something many choose to ignore.

Mine / Beast Of Prey

the sun is shining
it could be a wonderful day
the children play outside
while the birds sing in the sky

a warm breeze moves the grass
and small feet squeeze it
and while a butterfly passes
you hear the children laugh

it's waiting in the dark

a tiny metal bar
peeps out of the ground
dew reflects the sunrays
see me
see me
oh please see me

it's waiting in the dark

a stone is pushed back in the earth
while a small sole pushes the metal bar

a tiny flash
disappears into the ground
a soft click
and with a hollow sound
slowly it ejects - irrevocable
with a swirling movement like a butterfly
it's slowly climbing high
it passes the knees
it passes the hands
it passes the chest
until it reached its high
another click
and a fireball appears out of a shockwave
- the eardrums break
like deadly insects
a swarm of glowing spikes
bursts out of the red center
while flying razorblades
peel the last laugh off the face
- smeared with blood
a firestorm burns down pieces of flesh
on the red colored grass

stop searching
hell is already here
yes we made it happen
worse than any beast of prey

also, Clan of Xymox "The Same Dream" tugs at me, just from some personal experience. plus other songs already listed.

"Your Cloud," by Tori Amos, off of her Scarlett's Walk CD. I was listening to it right around the time I was getting divorced. The song is about splitting up and deciding who gets what, and it uses rain as a metaphor. That's the only song that's made me cry since I was an emotional teenage basket case.

I have the shirt from that song, with the "Stop searching; Hell is already here" lyrics on the back, and I'd never actually read the lyrics until now.

Well.

It does put things into perspective.

Seven Words - "So Sweet the Promise"

(before you read these lyrics, bear in mind the song is about an elderly man in a nursing home, whose wife has died, and he has thoughts about suicide and wanting to be with her again)

--

Their words are hollow; they mean nothing to me.
They're standing between us again. Can't they just let me be?

She comes to me in my dreams saying, "When will you follow me?"

I want to be with her again, to leave all this behind.
I need to be with her again. Nothing left to my life.

So sweet the promise of an end to the pain.
Left to my own devices I'd be with her again.

But they always interfere saying, "We know what's best for you".

I'll end my life if it means I could hold her in my arms once more...

I would have to say that the saddest song (to me, right now, anyways) is Joe by the Cranberries, only because i had a really good friend who was deployed earlier this year... unfortunately i found out that he had recently been killed... :banghead:

I don't know if I could name THE saddest song I've ever heard, but a short list of the most depressing songs to me would be:

She And Her Darkness-Diary of Dreams
Hurt-NIN
Burn-The Cure
Shame-Stabbing Westward
The Great Below-NIN
The Damage-Tapping the Vein
The Fragile-NIN (personal reasons)

The saddest song ever..."Danger Zone"-Kenny Loggins (Damn Goose don't die!!!)

Second saddest song ever... "Love Shack"-B52's (I never got any alternative girls in high school because,I hated this song soo bad.)

And on a serious note...I have never really been depressed by music. But,I have been known to shed a tear for "A warm Place" by NIN on lots of meds. :nopity: :nopity:

For me, the saddest song ever is And All That Could Have Been, by (who else?) NIN. If you guys have kazaa or any other downloading software, listen to it! It's fabulous

"Changed My Name" - Sugarcult

Yeah, I know Sugarcult is more "poppy" but that song has special meaning to me.
I don't know if it's the saddest I've heard...but it makes me cry.

Oh, and "122 and Highland" - Mest

It reminds me of Willow. :sadhug:

I fell in love with that song the very first time i heard it. Diary of Dreams is probably my favorite band right now.
Some of their song hist so close to home for me. I'm still not used to people knowing the stuff i listen to. Where i live there's almost no one that knows who Type O Negative is let alone who a band like Diary of Dreams are.

dammit, can't remember the name,it's either "nutshell" or "rotten apple",i always get the two confused....alice in chains

we chase misprinted lies
we face the path of time
and yet i fight, and yet i fight this battle all alone
no one to cry to
no place to call home
my gift of self is raped
my privacy is raked
and yet i find, and yet i find repeating in my head
if i can't be my own
i'd feel better dead.......
