umm... what the fuck?

If it's not covered by one of those other categories, you should probably talk about it here. Be nice.

Wow being a bit judgemental arn't we. A)you haven't heard the album yet, it may suck it may be good you don't know. B) she may very well be quite serious about her convictions to an alternate religion, just because she is a pop star doesn't mean she has to fit into a certian stereotype. If stereotypes were what we were going by I wouldn't be friends with any of you probably because almost non of you listen to/like the music I do, but hey here I am so get over it.

Yeah, she's made a lot of mistakes/comments like that. I have never liked her but her ignorance just shows through way too often. You'd assume that one would know the name of the original singer of the song you are covering...then again, I guess with her, assuming this would be wrong.

It all sounds silly.

But as far as I'm concerned, it's the end product (hint: the music) that's important. If I think she sucks ass after listening to it, well then I'll say so.

I've enjoyed plenty of other idiots' music in the past, even if I would like to pound their simple-minded heads into the pavement with a rusty shovel.

I don't really c the big ordeal... haven't heard it. But, damn, at least she could say she'z "Wiccan" not "Wicca"... az I believe that she meanz 2 b a follower of that faith, rather than the religion/path itself. Oh, & maturity iz seldom measurable by age (other than physical maturity)... Didn't she just say that she waz "more evolved" rather than mature?!

I agree with this 100%. Also, the media has a way of making even the most intelligent people look dumb as bricks and visa-versa. Give it a listen. If it's shite, fine but it may very well be her calling.

Sir Diddimus wrote:And, by passing judgement before even hearing the album, you become just like everyone else in the world. Perhaps a little bit of an open mind should be called for in this case. How can you speak of the horrible songs and album which you have yet to hear?
I have to agree with Queen of the Flock, she is a talented artist. So, who knows, this may be a great album, then again it may stink up the countryside.

My point, don't bitch about it until you hear it (and that won't be until next year). Then, complain all you want, or praise.... it makes no difference. This album is still going to be made and sold.

Think back..... Who could have EVER imagined that some little goth looking christian band would have huge mainstream hits and dance songs? Not everyone likes them, but you have to admit that you would never have predicted their success. If you don't know who I'm talking about, then crawl back under your rock. That is all.

My two cents......

I doubt she is though. I mean Sully Erna from Godsmack has even admitted to being Wiccan (correct me if I'm wrong), so who knows.

Sully is a dear friend of mine who was been Wiccan and proud for years. But he doesn't like to talk about it in band interviews because he wants people to focus on the band and the music-not his religion. He's is the only Wiccan in Godsmack btw.

Hey, did y'all know Sully lived in TN for a while?

the thought crossed my mind that, what if she really did write some great dark yet meaningful goth music, had an informed or creative way to look at "suicide" and "insomnia" that wasn't overly angsty but still made you sympathize? what if everyone in black ended up with their foot in their mouth for this. but then i got back to the fact that either someone is twisting her arm to do this, thus the arm twisting goes into the songs as well, or she really is as uninformed, out of touch, stereotypical, and foolish as she appears to be in that article. our "new american goth" 's album is going to be the lyrical and musical equivalent of "i believe in like spells and stuff like that" either way.

sure its possible, but honestly, how likely?

i don't also see this starting flock of "diet goths/wiccans"

If you hear me talk, in person, you would probably say the same thing about me. Just because she can make a point with musical lyrics that she spent time writing doesn't mean she's going to be able to get said point across by talking in a point blank interview. If you ask me a question, I generally stumble for answers and I insert the words "like" and "um" and "whatever" all over the place. It doesn't me an airhead. I also have been known to mess up on words that I use constantly. She's human. She's going to make grammatical errors. It's not like she's looking at a picture of Steven Tyler and calling him Ozzy Osborne and being completely ignorant. It's an interview.

 I'll introduce ya to the boys next time they come through here. Just don't slam Laurie Cabot around Sully, they are really close friends now. I don't discuss her with him either. ;)

Godsmack is one of the nicest bands that I know. I met them through another close friend of mine: the drummer of Sevendust. Sevendust played here on my b-day! :D

Find me @ Sanctus or on Halloween and we'll have a chat.

and btw, I'm trying really hard not to tell my opinion of Vanessa...I'm hoping someone else will say it for me. :P

Not to open up a can of worms here  ...But does anyone even buy "gothic" albums anymore? What is gothic music? I buy music that I think is more appreciated by people in the gothic scene, but I do not think that Nick Cave considers himself or his music gothic, nor did Andrew Eldrich (who was obviously gothic). I used to think that music or bands were gothic, but now I think that it is the gothic culture that embraces the music that they feel compliments their lifestyle. That's why there are so many black clad Cocteau Twins fans. I mean, have you ever seen interviews with Lisa Gerard from Dead Can Dance? Nothing overly "gothic" about her or her music, but, fuck it, we all love her, and them music fits perfectly.

The thing is, if you are a musician and your next album is going to have a darker feel to it, just say that. Throwing out the "G" word just doesn't seem to add to your crediblity. (Ever seen Sid and Nancy? There's a great scene on the bus during the American tour where a roadie (I think) is trying to sell Johnny Rotten on a song he wrote - "it's got a punky sound to it." Too funny)Let fans draw their own conclusions. They will accept it or not. It's the marketing I object to, not her beliefs or the direction she wants to explore with her music. I'd say more, but I sense I am rambling like a drunkard! Wait, I am a drunkard!

Well, I for one enjoy Vanessa Carlton's songs and her talent, even if I felt the last album was one long diatribe from a 16 yo girl's diary about heartbreaks. Which she admits.

My concern is more for the impression of Wicca being dark. Admittedly, it depends on your leanings within it, but it's not what I'd consider a 'dark' religion. It doesn't (typically) dwell on death and destruction and pain and so on, which is the impression I get she feels from the article. Well, I guess we all get what we need from our faiths. To note, I am not Wiccan, but I have studied it (and lived with one).

Merging the Wiccan and the 80's chick? Why do I picture a big-haired witch standing over a purple and pink cauldron casting a spell to get some actor to notice her? Gotta love stereotypes, at the least they give me a moment of humor, if not accuracy. :)

I think if Vanessa has control of the lyrical content of the album, it'll probably be alright. If this *is* the afeared marketing ploy, it's going to sound hollow... and I think we'll all figure that out.

Personally, I'll just hang out and wait to see if I like it. Harry Chapin isn't 'gothy' but he's one of the most depressive suckers I know. If he was marketed, today, he'd also probably associate with the scene. Because the upcoming artists grew up, looking at the scene from outside, and without being part of it just thinking that that was what it was about, and it's the best description others *also outside the scene* will stereotype it to, and understand it.

That marketing, if that's what it is, isn't directed at the scene, it'd be directed at everyone else.
If you don't know what that sound was, it's usually a good idea to duck.
