I agree.

if this is the way people really feel, then i must ask that you guys never come see me play, i suppose the most shocking thing i do when i perform is sweat and dance a lil.

at one time things like on stage mutilation and theatrics really interested me, then i had my 14th birthday and didnt really care anymore.

but to each his or her own. i just want to hear somthing good.

In fact, I think I would skip anything involving onstage surgery of any type - I just really don't want to see it.

My point was that theatrics have their place, and can make for a good performance on their own - and if they fit well with the music, so much the better. I kind of got distracted from the onstage surgery concept and was thinking about other types of theatrics. My educational background is technical theatre - with an emphasis on lighting and effects - so that was the sort of thing I was actually talking about.

I will add this, though. If you're going to do a performance that has to stand on musical merits alone, be sure that you've got a very good sound engineer. Bad sound will make a good musician sound like a horrible one.

I showed up to see you play - I liked it.

I only take offense at the concept that a musical performance should NEVER have theatrics included. I'm not saying that music MUST have a theatrical component, only that it's not wrong for a musical performance to have a theatrical component.

And that sometimes the effects stand on their own as an entertaining event.

This is kinda strange comming from me, but presentation is everything. It really sucks to have some one performing that has no stage presence. Your attention just will not be held unless you have some other compelling reason to watch.

That being said, if you have to be this elaborate to pull off your music, then I would say something is amiss. If you are just doing it to add to the stage show, then maybe it is okay (although I still cant grasp cutting myself for said reasons) More important than any blood that you can shed on stage is learning to engage the audience. The example that comes to my mind is Sinatra. For the most part, it was just him and a microphone, and the world thought he was great.

Granted, in this world of 10 second sound bytes it is nice to have something that will catch people's attention, but what really makes someone last is great music and the ability to make people look at you for no good reason.

Oh, Ok. I'm not saying that there should not be theatrical elements in a performance. I was commenting on the topic of this thread, aimed mostly towards the extreme and ridiculous self mutilatation that this individual wanted advice about. Theatrics are great (I'm a huge Broadway fan) but the talent has to go along with it. If someone has to contrive these extreme ways to get a rise out of the audience, then I think there is a problem. And extreme theatrics cover up performers that have minimal talent (aka Brittney Spears and her amazing lightshows and lack of clothing).

Hey theatrics have made for the best concerts I have ever seen. Kiss (in 1979) , Weird Al (1985?), Iron Maiden (1988), Marilyn Manson (1998), Alice Cooper (2000) and the list could go on and on Nothing like Pyro, Lighting, Video, and and a few good theatrics that can turn a mediocre show into an amazing one.
However all the stage show in the world won't help some artists ever get recognised as anything more than noevlty act, and certainly not artists. Gwar, & Impotent Sea Snakes are true examples.
