Coincidentally it was developed directly after the first Capoirista (SP?) came to the US. Breakdancing is essentially a non interactive variation on Capoiera, which is a dance/fighting form developed by African slaves in Brazil. If you are at all interested in knowing more about this, I HIGHLY recommend it, course I LOVE Capoiera.
*for all you video geeks, think Eddie Gordo on Tekken

Not trying to be a nazi, but it's "Capoeira". It is really fun, but good luck finding a practitioner who can fight, these days.

Regardless of that, it's very good exercise, (Sure as fuck beats Tae Bo.)

But you're right - it really started as an off-the-wall variation of guerilla warfare, developed by the Africans enslaved in Brazil. However, for the most part, what's practiced in the U.S. is considered Capoeira Regional - more dance and acrobatics - whereas the original (or thus I've been led to believe) is known as Capoeira Angola, which tends more towards takedowns and striking.

The difference is about the same as the difference between American Tae Kwon Do and Korean Tae Kwon Do.

Enormous.

Americans fuck everything up. :p

Thank you for your input, I was lucky enough to study for 2 semesters under a man who really knew what he was doing. We did Capoeira Regional (which is also practiced in Brazil, it is not JUST an American adaptation) and at the end of each class would "play" in a roda, which would involve striking and take downs (we were taught how to fall as well as block, and people rarely got hurt) It was one of the best classes I took in college!!

Bah. You all suck. The 80's sound so fun. I've watched "I love the 80's" a bunch, and a few things will be familiar, but all I really remember is stuff from early childhood. Carebears, Strawberry shortcake, Teddy Ruxpin (that was the scariest toy I ever owned...) saturday morning cartoons that didn't suck, playing outside, lol.

...But I can't wait until I get to lecture to the kiddies about the wonders of the 90's. Hehe. ;)

I thought [Vanilla Ice] was early 90's

Yeah, but his claim to fame was ripping off Queen's "Under Pressure" which was released in the early 80's, so he almost counts. ;)

And how come no body is giving swatches any love? What I wouldn't do to have about 8 or 9 swatches on my arm every now and then! I miss the 80s ... and the 90s for that matter. This decade is pathetic in almost every sense of the word. I mean, we had a shitty President and a shitty economy in the 80s, but at least the music was good. Now we got both of those and shitty music/culture, as well.

that movie will be released on DVD I believe in June if I remember correctly..

hypercolor has been mentioned..but I still have one that works

how about when you'd turn on the TV on a sat morning starting about 5 and sit for hours and watch nothing but cartoons...where did they all go? I was up yesterday morning and there was pretty much nothing in the way of cartoons on and the ones that were on were so irritating. Well most of them.

and the Jem DVD rocks I bet..I want it..

The Coreys (check out License to Drive, The Lost Boys, and Dream a Little Dream)

Definately the Johm Hughes films..(my fav is Breakfast Club)

the brat pack..group of teen or 20 something actors that were in everything (similar to the WB kids today)

Eastlands with no socks

jellies were evil but still somehow cool

Punky Brewster, "What you talkin bout Willis?"

Pogoballs, Bonkers Candy...

Does anyone else remember the horrible product known as New Coke?

[quote="X"]1. EveL as much as i LOOOOVE prince, he did NOT own every year of the 80s...infact he was very non main stream until 1999 came out in 83, purple rain in 84 was fucking HUGE. But then Cherry Moon like blew up in his face. Now granted i liked Around the world in a day, Lovesexy, Parade, and even the Batman stuff all those....(86, 87 and 89) were pretty much colossal flops. Well, Batman was huge, and i LOVE the batman album, but most people make fun of it. So....in retrospect, commercially, Prince only really RULED 1983, 84, 86 (with Parade) and technically 89.

Sign of the Times - 88-89, double cassette/cd. HUGE. Rasberry Beret - huge.

Living in minneapolis when prince was huge - priceless.

yes the sign o the times album was pretty big, it was the comeback that was then foiled by the lovesexy album, and then of course the batman thing. I left it out on purpose.

Raspberry Beret singly also did a good number, but it came off of the heels of Purple Rain, so honestly, it was gonna be big no matter what. (it is infact one of my more fav prince songs at that) but truely in marketing, if you feed someone a steak dinner every night for a year...then give them a piece of poop, and tell them it tastes the same, they'll fall for it at least once....i say once...name me another hit a real radio hit for the next 2-3 years.

(and before its said, pop life doesn't count, cus it wasn't a radio hit)

Ahem. That particular quote originated from Diff'rent Strokes.
