True dat. Everyone wants to be a goth but no one wants to be a goth. Few bands beloved of those interested in gothic culture consider themselves to be gothic. The bands mentioned for starters, and throw in Nick Cave, Diamanda Galas, Current 93 - all "not Goth," usually stated with a shudder of disgust.
And yet, go to a show, look at the fucking audience Do these bands really have no concept or appreciation of their fan base? I guess everyone just wants to be "above" the label.
But in the end, that's all it is. A label. Something to file a band, a sound, a person under for easy understanding and acceptance or rejection. in the end, if it makes you feel gothic, it's gothic. To you at least, and who the fuck else matters anyway?
