Anyone else like to make purty soaps or bath products?
KarlaBOO gave me some neat plastic thingies from Pier One to use as molds...so last night I got motivated and made a few.
I cut up loofah sponge into 1/2 inch thick circles and placed them in the mold with some lavender blooms. I just did the melt-and-pour method (I was lazy), added some lavender essential oil and some red and blue coloring to make it purple. They came out pretty, but I should have used some vaseline to aid them in releasing from the mold better.
Now I'm looking at ebay for soap and candle molds...dangerous...

I love making soap. Plus you can give it whatever scents you want, which is nice. I use melt and pour because I'm not so much into the "rendering sheep tallow" thing, and I like the shea butter stuff anyway.
Lately I've been trying the color-blending thing, where you have two containers of soap cooling until they start to get nice and thick, and then you pour them at the same time so you have a color on either side and a wiggly border in between.
That Jo-Anne place on North Peters has lots of molds and soap stuff and a few scents..

I told you to vaseline them first, sillyness. I like to make soap. I like making it from scratch better. It takes it too long to set (for me) when I do it any other way. I haven't tried the melt and pour, but I have done the one where you grate Ivory, melt it, and add other things to it.
My favorite frangrance blend is Jasmine E.O., Lavender E.O., a smidgen of Patchouli E.O. (to blance out all that sweetness), and ground, dried chammomile. I colored them with a light blue-violet. They were very pretty with the yellow bits of flowers sticking out.

I have a few friends from Gothic Auctions that make their own soaps...and I really got interested in making them right before the wedding, because I wanted to have my bridal gifts be completely handmade. I never had the extra change to buy all of the supplies, though.
I did learn how to make bath salts, and I've been addicted ever since. My favourite scents right now are pear-berry, and my forever favourite, vanilla...even though that is my winter scent.

I love, love, LOVE making soaps and beauty products.
The supplies are too damn expensive! It has taken me forever to just get what I have now. Buying a little bit here and there.

Yeah, collecting the supplies a little at a time is the only way. But once you have them, it's like "Oh, mother's day gift, birthday gift"... I like making gifts for people. And the selfish practical side of me likes not shopping for gifts.

I love making soap from scratch! I don't know how much money i've spent on soap making supplies @.@ I have tons of fragrances and I make my own colors from pigments. I mix then with a little water into 1 oz. bottles. I will be willing to sell them for only $1 a bottle wich is way cheaper than the ones you buy anywhere else and a little goes a long way. This is a link to my favorite place to buy molds.

It's a little bit spendy but the molds are well built and last a long time. Heres another great soap/candle supplier link

Theyre fragrance prices are nice and they have such a big selection!
I DO NOT recoment the witches brew scent >_< yuk!
Also I recoment after pouring the soap into the molds let it sit for a half an hour then put it in the freezer for a half and hour and the soap should pop right out.

Hey Darkfaerie! I'm glad you got back on the board! I spoke with you at Hot Topic about the soaps you sold at the swap meet, and I've talked to you at Sanctus.
I still want one of those black wire and skull bracelets you made, and your Lolita outfit was awesome!!

I have had some trouble with the molds for soap-making. Great tip about using the vasaline!
