this forum is under new management, or that is to say is under management for the first time. being somewhat new to knoxville i have begun a quest to find the flavor of this city. what better way than through its cuisine. i will endeavor to post regular reviews of eating establishments visited in my quest. and i encourage you all to share your experiences of any favorite haunts or places to be avoided.
thankyou all for you time and attention and sorry to have disappointed anyone who thought this might be about er...um...something other than food.

A flavor to this city?!? HA HA
I would say there's not one distinct flavor to the area. There seems to be every type of restaurant known to man in this town..... Just drive down Kingston Pike, you can go all the way around the world with the different types of restaurants there.
Hey, it's not food either.

The Flavor of Knoxville is Chain.
Chain restaurant, that is. Knoxville is so Mid-America that we're the national capital of chain restaurant testing. We also have more restaurants per capita than any city in the U.S. other than NYC.

You know, I've heard this as well, and even perpetuated it. Unfortunately, it seems that it will be very difficult, as the claim for the most restaurants per capita is made by many cities.
Dallas, for example, claims to have 4 times the restaurants per capita of NYC.
The claim for most is made by Columbus, OH; San Francisco; Louisville, KY; Omaha; Austin, TX; Boulder, CO; Madison, WI; Addison, TX; and quite a few more cities. Apparently, nobody has bothered to actually compile accurate statistics on restaurants per capita in this country.
