well, let's try it out.

one.. two ... three ... *thunk*

seriously, it depends on the individual, your physical and mental activity levels, your diet, psychological functions, etcetera.

of course, if it's really important, you could always check with guiness.

My hubby once went 10 days without sleeping. When he finally did sleep, it was for 48 straight hours.

It is not so much the not sleeping as the not dreaming.

I'm no expert, but I heard someplace that you need to sleep because of toxins that build up in your system. Or something like that.

I've pulled the occasional all-nighter, but they're rare. (most recent was due to labor pains.... and followed by almost no sleep the next night due to hospital staff wanting vital signs every hour) I doubt willingly staying up till dawn watching anime and dying everyone's hair counts. Insomnia occasionally sets in for an hour or two at a stretch, but never all night. I know, you all hate me. tee hee hee.

Lay down the pipe, Dude!

Seriously, try taking melatonin if it won't interfere with your other meds, if you're taking any.

And here's a version of Independent Women you'll love if you're sleep depped...

if i remember psych 101 correctly, your body rebuilds cells and eliminates the toxins that build up during sleep. and i believe that cs was right about the dream part. i think the "average" person can go 5 days without sleep before it takes its toll on you.

not for sure though...

Sleep is when the spirit can leave the body without dying, because death is the body's natural state. Life is a prison, sleep is a vacation.

i've tried to give up sleep before. i mean, i tried to see if i could just not sleep, and had been rather desperate about this for some time.

it sucked goat nads. hairy, sweaty goat nads.

i found that, in trying to escape dreaming by not sleeping, i only forced myself to dream while i was awake. and oddly enough, after spending 4 and a half days without being under the influence of drugs, i found it rather difficult to get to sleep to end the terrible experiment.

it's not something i would ever like to repeat.

There was a group of scientst that forceabely kept a guy up for like 70+ hours with electroshock gadgits. He spent the last couple hours in the floor in the fetal position begging them to let him sleep or shoot him.

But I've gone a couple days via insomnia. And that aint no fun when your welding for a living, or running a lather or a mill.
