I Before E, Except After C

Did anyone else here learn all those little poems and memory tricks to help with spelling? I only remember one offhand, but it's one of the most useful things I ever memorized:

I before E,
Except after C,
And words with long A
Such as "neighbor" and "weigh".

It's the E/I I/E and E/U combos that I confuse the worst...

Oh, yeah, I forgot the Its/It's thing, which I can only remember because of this:

His, Hers, Its

And "Its" still looks wrong without the apostrophe!

Having been weaned from reality by the internet at a rather early age, I have come to rely on the ultimate mnemonic: Dict dot org. :D

I need to learn the whole of that rhyme "thirty days hath september" er whatever...

And I have so much trouble with lay/lie and sit/sat/set.

Ew...fuck english class. I'm out of high school and so far in college I haven't been penalized for anything spellcheck didn't catch.

I'm gonna write however I damn well please.

Yeah, fuck English class!

Language is so uninportant anyway. Why waste my time trying to learn how to express myself intelligently?

Maybe I should invest my Grad school money in something like... a gothic wardrobe. Or a bomb shelter.

And why was I up til 5 in the morning writing that paper? I'm just poking at you, Morgan. I'm on my way to Shakespeare right now.

Ok..I'm taking the bait. Of course language is important, its good to be able to express yourself, blah blah blah, but I think I'm lucky enough to have pretty good spelling and grammar (even though it has worsened in the 5 years since high school) so I suppose I don't care to be too anal about it in myself, or in others. I've never had anyone complain about my writing..so it's not something I worry about too much.

I always made very good grades in english, but I did prefer the reading and comprehension to the grammar rules, sentence diagramming and whatnot. However, my english classes at Oak Ridge High were harder than any in college I've had. Heck, every class at ORHS was harder than any at pstcc or UT.

I withdrew from Shakespeare....bleh.

And I don't think I'll be affording grad school, if I even finish my B.A....

You biased english major...;)
:P

No, the whole thread wasn't intended as bait - I was seriously asking if anyone remembered all those rhymey things we were taught in school to remember where the letters go...

Do you three live your lives looking for a fight to pick?

We're not picking a fight, JaNell. *laughs* I think the basis of my relationship with Morgan has always been friendly/sarcastic poking. It is VERY hard on a forum to distinguish between what is pert witticism and what is an attack. That what the inserted smileys are supposed to convey, due to the obvious lack of vocal inflection.

Actually, Buttercup and I are going to duke it out at the next Sanctus, just so that everyone can vicariously relieve some tension. And she will totally kick my ass, I guarantee you.

I believe it goes:
Thirty days hath September
April,June and November.

Then the rest is:
All the rest have thirty-one
Except February which has twenty-eight
Til Leap Year gives it twenty-nine.
I think that's how that went. That was in third grade so it's been awhile. hehe! :nag:

Not you, or ibbie...
Just the three who seek out threads I'm on to start stuff. It's eventually going to come down to me saying something like, "I went to the thrift store today blah blah blah" and one of them will immediately accuse me of calling them cheap somehow. Maybe they'll even start fighting over who I actually slurred in some highly coded way...

I'm sorry, I can be a little 'noid sometimes and I thought it might be an attempt to pick at our less-anal-with-grammar-and-spelling members, because that has been the case a few times.

It may be, it may not have been...but if I was wrong, I do sincerely apologize.

I have sensed a pattern with baited threads though....

But, again...sorry if I was wrong.

LOL. Actually I find this situation a good example of how people can move on after online arguing. A long time ago, me and ophelia, Dominion and some other peeps got into a pretty big argument. Basically, I wanted to call someone out on their bad attitude and rudeness. I wanted to say, "you are an asshole", he said, "yes, I'm an asshole" and that was enough for me. I moved on with my life, and they did with theirs.

Now I see them from time to time and we are quite civil....it's really a beautiful thing...*sniffle*

School House Rock. I still love those, even if they think that Chubby Checker was white.

It actually takes quite a lot to do that. I mean, a person really, really has to try, so don't worry about it.

could never remember the month's ryme but used the "knuckle" method instead...wait for it, no really it works like this:

starting with your index finger knuckle working your way to your pinky knuckle evey knuckle has 31 days the space in-between has less than 31 that gets you to july then start over. bing! know you know how my lame ass tells if a month has 31 days in it and as long as i remember february is 28 days or less i'm good to go :D

I learned it a wee bit differently:

Thirty days hath September,
April, June, and November.
Thirty-one hath all the rest
except for February, which is the best.
