I ;love Joel Peter witkin's work, he is considered a fringe artist, especially by purist photographers who cringe at his scratched degatives lol.

However he's very succesful, the UT library has a great book with his stuff which has a picture of a fist f*** that makes you wonder if the receient survived.

I think his work carries the qualtiy of smiotics that aurla fixation pointed out, and I also think he has a strong place in art history.
