What's the saddest song you've ever heard?

The saddest song I think I've ever heard was Bjork's "New World" that plays during the closing credits of her movie, "Dancer In The Dark." If you listen to it by itself, it's just kind of pretty. But in context to what you've just seen at the end of the movie and the "Next To The Last Song," it's just heartbreakingly beautiful. Her ghostly inflection tops some of Siouxie's best. If you haven't seen this movie, I suggest it to anyone who appreciates sad movies.

New World

Train-whistles, a sweet clementine
Blueberries, dancers in line
Cobwebs, a bakery sign

Ooooh - a sweet clementine
Ooooh - dancers in line
Ooooh ...

If living is seeing
I'm holding my breath
In wonder - I wonder
What happens next?
A new world, a new day to see

I'm softly walking on air

Halfway to heaven from here
Sunlight unfolds in my hair

Ooooh - I'm walking on air
Ooooh - to heaven from here
Ooooh ...

If living is seeing
I'm holding my breath
In wonder - I wonder
What happens next?
A new world, a new day to see

if only you'd never speak to me
the way that you do
if only you'd never speak like that
it's like listening to
a breaking heart
a falling sky
fire go out and friendship die
i wish you felt the way that i still do

if only you'd never look at me
the way that you do
if only you'd never look like that
when i look at you
i see face like stone
eyes of ice
mouth so sweetly telling lies
i wish you felt the way that i still do
the way that i still do
but you don't
you don't feel anymore
you don't care anymore
it's all gone

if only you'd never pull from me
the way that you do
if only you'd never pull like that
when i'm with you
i feel hopeless hands helplessly
pulling you back close to me
i wish you felt the way that i still do
the way that i still do

if only you'd ever speak to me
the way you once did
look at me the way you once did
pull to me the way you once did
but you don't
you don't feel anymore
you don't care anymore
it's all gone

Doug Stone's I'd be Better Off (in a Pine Box) is it for me:

I'D BE BETTER OFF (in a pine box)

(G)I SAID THE NIGHT YOU LEFT ME
NOTHIN (C)WORSE COULD EVER (G)HAPPEN
BUT (C)SEEING YOU WITH (G)SOMEONE ELSE
PROVED THAT I WAS (D)WRONG
(C)AND WHEN YOUR EYES MET MINE, I KNEW
(G)THAT YOU WERE GONE FOREVER
ALONG WITH ALL THE REASONS (D)I HAD FOR HANGING (G)ON

CHO:
I'D BE (C)BETTER OFF IN A PINE BOX
ON A SLOW TRAIN BACK FROM (G)GEORGIA
IN A GRAY WALLS OF A (D)PRISON DOING (C)TIME
I (C)THINK I'D RATHER (D)DIE AND GO TO (G)HELL AND FACE THE (C)DEVIL
(G)THAN TO LIE HERE WITH (C)YOU AND HIM (D)TOGETHER ON MY (G)MIND

I (G)ALWAYS THOUGHT SOMEDAY, WE (C)MIGHT GET BACK (G)TOGETHER
I (C)JUST THOUGHT (G)YOU NEEDED TIME
TO SPREAD YOUR WINGS AND (D)FLY
(C)BUT WHEN I SAW THE LIVIN WAY, YOU (G)HELD ONTO EACH OTHER
IT WAS ALL THAT I COULD DO, (D)NOT TO BREAK RIGHT DOWN AND (G)CRY
REPEAT CHO: 2X'S

"Brother in Arms" - Dire Straits

These mist covered mountains
Are a home now for me
But my home is the lowlands
And always will be
Some day you'll return to
Your valleys and your farms
And you'll no longer burn
To be brothers in arm

Through these fields of destruction
Baptism of fire
I've watched all your suffering
As the battles raged higher
And though they did hurt me so bad
In the fear and alarm
You did not desert me
My brothers in arms

There's so many different worlds
So many different suns
And we have just one world
But we live in different ones

Now the sun's gone to hell
And the moon's riding high
Let me bid you farewell
Every man has to die
But it's written in the starlight
And every line on your palm
We're fools to make war
On our brothers in arms

Rosa Mystica by Theresa Schroeder-Sheker

A very simple song sung by a woman with an angelic, haunting voice. I wish I knew where to find the lyrics. Perhaps they haven't been typed up because they're not in English.

Without a doubt, it's "Wake" by Leiahdorus. One of the most hauntingly sad and beautiful songs I have ever heard.

"Ashes ashes we all fall down / sooner or later, we all fall down ..."

"Outside no sun shining/ outside no one playing our song
In the distance the wind is breathing ...
In the distance I am screaming your name ..."

Well I want to think about that for awhile cuz I realy like sad songs, but then a stupid song will bring back a sad memory sometimes.

But my first thought would be:"

The Bluest man in town" by Bill Monroe

She's gone away and left me here to find somebody new
now she's off with her new love and I'm alone and blue

Shadows are creaping around my door
The sun will soon sink low
The night birds are calling
whenever I'm on the mountain
I'm the bluest man in town.

Second would be

"The Walls of Time" By Bill Monroe

The wind is blowing cross the mountains
And out on the valley way below.
It sweeps the grave of my darling
When I die that's where I want to go.

Lord send the angels for my darling
And take her to that home on high
I'll wait my time out here on earth love
And come to you when I die.

Our names are carved upon the tombstone
I promised you before you died
Our love will bloom forever darling
When we rest side by side.

I hear a voice out in the darkness
It moans and whispers through the pines
I know it's my sweetheart a calling
I hear her through the walls of time

Waking up beside you (remix) - Stabbing Westward

I've been so alone for so long
forgotten by the world
forgotten to my self
your effervescent eyes have awakened me
and brushed the dust away...
but i knew you'd never stay

so i memorized the color of your eyes
as i lost myself inside you
i memorized the way our legs entwined
as i drifted off beside you...

at night i cling to you i'm so afraid
afraid the day will come
and i'll wake up and find you gone

but you promise that you'd not abandon me
and kissed my fears away...
but i woke up to that day...
but i had memorized the way our eyes would meet
reflected in the bathroom mirror
and i memorized your naked silhouette
as you slowly brushed your hair...

i miss god i miss waking up beside you

i've been alone for so long...
i forgot how much it hurts to wake up so alone
but i'd memorized how warm your body felt
as you lay half asleep beside me
and i memorized the way the sunlight filled the room
and played upon your body

I miss god i miss waking up beside you

I have actually cried to this song after losing a loved one....

this may be cliche but Its my opinion

The Cash Version of Hurt

I swear to god I cried the day he died when I heard that song, its just the way he sings it.

My Dying Bride - For my Fallen Angel

As I draw up my breath,
And silver fills my eyes.
I kiss her still,
For she will never rise.

On my weak body,
Lays her dying hand.
Through those meadows of Heaven,
Where we ran.

Like a thief in the night,
The wind blows so light.
It wars with my tears,
That won't dry for many years.

"Loves golden arrow
At her should have fled,
And not Deaths ebon dart
To strike her dead."

Yah, sure, and next thing you know, you'll claim Stephen Groth didn't write Coma White or Electricity. Pfft. Whatever.
