repost from another website:
whats your top ten albums and why?
no particular order

the beatles - white album
this requires NO explaination. anyone whos going to right music thats frustrated or in anyway emotional (read: not emo, i mean emotional)...anyone whos ever been so addicted and withdrawn they cant see, anyone whos saw life for what it is.. and saw the beauty in it as well. this album has a night day contrast of songs and lyrics and i love it for that among many other reasons

misfits - earth ad
best punk album of all time (though road to ruin by the ramones could fight it) because its not punk but its punk as fuck but its real hatred not just anger and it was totally different than everything else. this album changed the rules.

today is the day - sadness will prevail
a 2 cd soundtrack to a nervous breakdown/suicide the way it really sounds in your head as it happens. noisy, distorted, pianos, cellos, choirs of screaming, begs for salavation, and songs that he was so tore up he wouldnt even sing the lyrics and they stayed instrumental (a large portion of the album is like that). any time im getting close to death, this is my soundtrack. i listen to it alot.

nin - downward spiral
wow. this album fused love of industrial with manic depression and hatred. yet most of it is so damn pretty. you all own this album. it speaks for itself. so frustrated to come out that concentrated.

danzig-4
an experimental danzig album sounds like a joke until you realize every one was experimental. danzig going gothier and slower... more depressed, less rocky sound. dark evil and i love it
the focus again is keeping with my linear trend here, but usually when im in a good mood i listen to tons of different kinds of music. when im not, i gotta go with the tried and true.

samhain - november coming fire
last danzig related album i swear, im just a huge fan. and this album is just fucking amazing. the voice, the anger, and the arrangements of near punk near metal near tribal not anything was just cool as shit. just so dark.

cash - american recordings
the most atmosphereic album of all time. period.

tool- aenima
the became the most influential band to the heavy forumla since black sabbath with this album. if youve heard it, you know why. songwritiers across the globe gave up when this album came out.

fear factory - demanufacture
i bought a seven string over this album. i started singing again after a few years off over this album. best industrial metal album EVER MADE.burton c bell is one of the most under appreciated vocalist of all time. period.dino is one of the"" guitarists of all time.
and raymond is one of the" " drummers of all time.this is their best album.

pink floyd- the wall
take over the world with music? haha. genious.do it thru the pain of isolation on record? life changing.

runners up:
nirvana-in utero (im jealous i didnt write that album, sans a few songs)
radiohead -kid A (one of the best albums of the last decade, too bad there hasnt been more competion)
afi - black sails in the sunset (goth. punk. anger. nuff said.)
ministry- psalm 69 (industrial hell)
tom waits- bone machine (best tom waits album.)
black sabbath - paranoid (the album that ruined my life... thank you!)
kmfdm-nihil (weeeeeeeeeee! keyboards!)
bad religion - generator (my god...)
pantera-far beyond driven (just fun)
gg allin - freaks faggots drunks and junkies (dont even try to understand that one)

god i could list albums all day.

Super difficult to do here at work without my cd collection in front of me, but I will try. Top 10 albums. I could take this 2 ways: The 10 greatest albums ever recorded, or my 10 favorites. Not necessarily the same thing. I'm going to simply go with my favorites as that is the easy route.

1. Current 93 - ThunderPerfectMind. My all time favorite album frm my all time favorite band. With over 50 albums to their credit, trying to describe Current 93 to someone is like trying to describe Frank Zappa. Where do you begin? This album was the zenith of their apocolyptic folk period and is their most song structured album to date. It still has a lot of creepy backround and samples, but the instrumentation and vocals are the best they have ever been. Simply outstanding all around.

2. Laibach - Krst Baptism. This is orchestral / operatic Laibach. No dancey stuff here. The album is very serious and powerful, with a sense of beauty that rises above the more militant music.

3. Current 93 - Dog's Blood Rising. The first C93 album I ever heard and still the most spine tingling. THis is very dark, very heavy stuff...Quite nightmarish actually. This was originally released in 1984 and will be the release that Current 93 are most famous for. The overall effect of this CD on the listener is so intense, I've seen it literally shred people's minds. At some point in your life, this CD will get to you. You'll know it when it happens. You'll FEEL it. Fight it out. Resist the temptation to turn it off. Some things need to be braved. There are two extremes in the music of C93. This is one, Thunder Perfect Mind is the other. Both are exceptional, cathartic recordings. TPM is also the perfect follow up if Dog's Blood brings you TOO far down.

4. This Mortal Coil - Filigree and Shadow. The Jeweler, Tarantula, Strength of Strings. If you like alternating male female vocals over some of the most beautiful instrumentation you are likely to ever hear...Well, this is for you. Lovely and forelorn music.

5. Angels of Light – New Mother. This is Gira's first project since the Swans, and is the most amazing thing he has ever done. That, oh my droogies is very high praise indeed. The closest Swans release I could compare it to would be The Burning World, but this is so much more rich in texture. His vocals have never sounded better, and the lyrics are pure spite filled, self loathing Gira - "Now I, I despise the reflection of my face in your pale blue eyes. But I accept the evil that has grown deep inside my drunken mind." These lyrics are from the song This is Mine, which sounds like it could be a lost track from the Wall ( I think Waters and Gira would get along splendidly). But the instrumentation is the most amazing thing here: Hauntingly beautiful, full of acoustic instruments of all kinds, organ, piano, horns, violins and more - dobro, dulcimer, vibraphone, glockenspiel, accordion, the list goes on and on. There is just so much going on from track to track here I can't begin to describe it. The buildup to the song Angels of Light simply must be heard to be believed. Disturbing music dealt with beautifully.

6. Antony and the Johnsons - ST. Rarely does a CD grab me so completely from the first track. Granted, I had an idea of what to expect from the ...Jaw dropping ... first single, Cripple and the Starfish. As Antony belted out the epic (as is every song on this release) Twilight, I realized, happily, that first single was no fluke. There are so many comparisons one could draw form the style of this band, from This Mortal Coil to BIg Star, Tiny TIm to any number of torch song divas, but that is all too superficial to grasp the majesty and power of their compositions and immaculate delivery. In the end, they are truly in a class all their own. Where Gira from the Swans may wallow in depression, Antony triumphs in it. Listen to this at high volumes for the full effect. I can only imagine the feeling you would leave with after seeing Antony and the Johnsons perform live. It must be cathartic to say the least. Indescribable and powerfully moving orchestrated power ballads you have to hear to believe.

7. Mr. Bungle - California. This one is sure to open a lot of eyes. The thing is, it's demented enough to generate the twisted Mr. Bungle appeal, but it is accessible enough to really catch on - Hopefully leading people to check out earlier Bungle, Zorn, Zappa,Clinton and much more! Ahem...Is that a politically correct way of saying that Mr. Bungle have produced a commercial album? I suppose so, but what is wrong with that? I loved Disco Volante and the debut, but this is no less impressive. It is still edgy, slightly demented music, though their sound has certainly changed. They maintain some of the swingy jazzy edges and just a dose of their canivalesque madness, but forgo the sudden speed metal outbursts...Most of the time. The songs themselves are generally catchier, more traditionally structured songs than the more free flowing anything goes style of before. There are even a couple of wistful ballads that invoke the father of sweet madness, Brian Wilson. The thing is, I can picture a lot of metal heads really getting into this. It is a powerful and quirky, all too short masterpiece

8. Sephiroth - Cathedron. Eagerly awaited and hastily ordered, this did not disappoint. Cold Meat Industry releases some of the most amazing dark atmospheric music you can find, and Sephiroth is one of their newest rising stars. His contribution to CMIs amazing compilation, The Absolute Supper, was the best thing on the disc. And until now, about the only thing readily available by him. Cathedron is entirely spooky. Fans of old Coil will eat this shit up and be begging for seconds. The only contemporaries that release music of this caliber are Shinjuku Thief and Lustmord. Old Morthond releases also have a similar feel, but best of luck finding any of them. Primitive, tribal and haunting are words that come to mind - and breathtaking. Dark soundscapes.

9. Tindersticks - Curtains. If you are a Nick Cave or Tom Waits fan, chances are good that you are already a fan of the Tindersticks. Curtains is more orchestrated (literally) than earlier efforts, and is a bit more sparse as well. In this case, that is a good thing. This is their third and best release. Beautiful, romantic music with just a touch of spite. as an added bonus, Bongwater's Ann Magnuson's duets on one track. Play it for a lover. Loosely alternative .

10. Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here. My favorite Pink Floyd album. If you need someone to describe Pink Floyd to you , you need to buy more music.

After a few days of contemplation, I think i can actually handle this one. This topic is a very difficult one to handle because there are so many possibilities but i think i've got it now, if not i can always bitch at myself later. So in no paticular order:

Nine Inch Nails- Pretty Hate Machine because it has a lot of anger and a ballence of sadness. You can feel this album so much, and the fact that there is something on there than anyone can relate to in at least one part or period in their life, this must be on this list.

Stabbing Westward - Darkest Days. This is their best album in my opinion. Darkest Days has helped me through my darkest days whenever they rear it's evil head. Not only does it possess one of the saddest songs that are in existance "Waking Up Beside You," but it also has an arsenal of songs for both depression and rage which could take a person off the edge either way.

Type O Negative- Least Worst Of. The reason i went with the best of album is so i have room for others really. This is truely a great best of album, the real reason i chose this album is because it has "Love you to death," "12 Black Rainbows," and "Christian Woman" in one place.

Diary Of Dreams - Freak Perfume. This album is the latest album of Diary of Dreams, it has haunting lyrics. It is also one of these albums that you can feel starting at track one all the way to the end. Every song the Vocalist put heart and soul into which more times than not lead up to a very powerful album. In my opinion everyone sould listen to "She and Her Darkness" and "Play God!" off of this album.

Stabbing Westward - Ungod. This album have so many personal emotional ties but for the topics and the lryics it's hard for one not to get emotionally tied to this album. This album has everything from erotic songs, god i miss your!, right down to Leave me Alone while i kill myself. The depths of this album is only matched on the Darkest Days album.

Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon. Do I need to discuss why on this one? other than the obvious two words "Brain Damage"

All of you can hate me for this next one but read my reasoning behind it and then you'll understand why i said it.

Metallica - Master of Puppets. My reasoning behind this is if it weren't for Metallica, i would not have started my decent down the spiral to where i am today. This album is their best album it speaks of Drug Addiction and it has their darkest lryics. One last reason "Sanatarium" the first song that helped me deal with the shit that i was dealing with when i was an early teen. So hate me for it but this is one of my all time favorite albums.

Black Sabbath - Paranoid, Old roots part of the reason the music that we all love exist today. Plus it's a really good album.

Music From the Succubus Club- The Vampire the Masquarde Soundtrack. I played the game for some years then I decided to get the album and see what songs they had to represent the clans in the game. To be honest it was this album that lead me to the music that i'm listening to right now, it has such bands as The Cruxshadows, Bella Morte, and Diary of Dreams among others. This album is recommended to everyone. It's just a great album that one could dance to if they were so inclinded.

Bella Morte - The Quiet. Whispers..... that's about all i need to say on that one. For those of you that knew that it was your last night with someone or you knew that it wouldn't last for long and you were treasuring every last second with that person this song speaks of that, and the rest of the album is also very great. Every song touches your soul.

Nine Inch Nails - The Fradgile. Among these two cd's are a lot of great music, gut wrenching, painful, and a few songs that help uplift the spirits such as "Starfuckers Inc." This is one of those albums that i feel should be put in every mailbox worldwide. It's that good. With songs like "The Wreched, The Fradgile, We're in this together, Where is Everybody" How could you go wrong?

Well i guess that's what i've got right now, as time goes on i'm sure there will be other cd's that creep into this list.

This is one hell of a hard list to come up with, but here goes:

(10) Queensryche -- Operation Mindcrime. One of maybe two or three concept albums in the history of rock that actually worked. This album mixes revolutionary politics with drug addiction and a tragic romance, and in the process carries paranoia to a whole new level. It starts off bleak and never lets up, painting a picture of a world controlled by Republicans and evangelists. It's a frightening "what if" story of how people are manipulated by the social forces around them -- it even attacks the liberal counterculture as just another corrupt political system waiting to be born.

(9) Nirvana -- In Utero. The finest example of early 90s rock and far better than its more popular predecessor. This CD is pure emotion - unfiltered - and captured perfectly by Steve Albini's mix.

(8) The Rolling Stones -- Let It Bleed. The death knell to the '60s. Also, "Gimme Shelter" is arguably one of the two or three best rock songs ever written.

(7) Return of the Living Dead (soundtrack). Brain soup, heroin, Roky Erickson howling in a haunted house and an account of sleeping with the devil ("it was really no big thrill"). The best collection of mid-80s punk rock and pop parody out there.

(6) The Sex Pistols -- Never Mind The Bollocks. How could this NOT be on here? Not the first punk rockers, but the first to adopt an utterly nihilistic stance without drowning in pretention. Can anyone imagine what music would sound like today without "Holidays in the Sun," "God Save the Queen" or "Anarchy in the U.K."?

(5) Tool -- Aenema. Ground-breaking in a way that few artists can ever even dream of achieving. The best thing about Tool (and especially this record) is that they understand the importance of subtlety and mood. The band is also easily compared to '80s-era Metallica (although there are probably those who would violently disagree) due to their long, intricate compositions topped with superb lyrics.

(4) Big Black -- The Rich Man's Eight Track. There would have been no Ministry or Nine Inch Nails had Steve Albini not invented the formula (pulsing eletronic beats cut with roaring guitar and taboo-shattering lyrics of alienation) in a basement in Chicago. This is a collection from the band's first few recordings. The highlight is "Kerosene," possibly THE greatest song in the genre, which suggests self-immolation as the perfect cure for boredom.

(3) Pink Floyd -- The Wall. The greatest concept album ever. Period.

(2) Metallica -- Master of Puppets. No matter what you think of this band now, back in the '80s they seemed to be the most original and ferocious band in the world. This is their most perfect record -- there's not a bad or even indifferent track on it. It's got drugs, madness, violence, TV evangelists, and war as well as a creepy tribute to H.P. Lovecraft and the surreal instrumental track "Orion."

(1) Led Zeppelin IV -- Why? "Stairway to Heaven," "The Battle of Evermore," "When the Levee Breaks," etc.

Others:
Psychotica -- Psychotica
Nine Inch Nails -- Pretty Hate Machine.
Alice In Chains -- Dirt.
Ministry -- The Mind Is A Terrible Thing To Taste.
Lords of Acid -- Voodoo-U.
Singles -- Soundtrack.
The Crow -- Soundtrack.
The Police -- Synchronicity.
The Smashing Pumpkins -- Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness.
Metallica -- And Justice For All.
Big Black -- Songs About Fucking
Guns and Roses -- Appetite for Destruction
Blue Oyster Cult -- Secret Treaties
Faith No More -- Angel Dust
Hole -- Live Through This

Damn this is hard, but here goes.

HIM-Deep Shadows and Brilliant Highlights. My favorite album by my favorite band. Filled with the pain of love and heartbreak. Also this album has my favorite song of all time, Heartache Every Moment.

NIN-Pretty Hate Machine. Hard to choose a favorite NIN album, but if I had to,this would be it.The first NIN I ever picked up and the album that really got me started on my dark industrial obsession. Sin and Something I Can Never Have are reason enough to buy this.

AFI-Black Sails In The Sunset. My favorite album by and AMAZING band.Such a great mixture of punk and goth, filled with anger but also with hope.Davey Havok is one of the greatest inspirations for my life because of his refusal to lay down and die, despite all of his pain. Also, Malleus Malleficarum is my fav song by AFI.

Stabbing Westward-Darkest Days. I have to agree with Falsey, the best Stabbing Westwad album. The soundtrack for the darkest days in my life.

Velvet Acid Christ-Fun With Knives. VAC is simply amazing.Heavy, dark music with heavily distorted vocals that take a back seat to movie samples. This album is may favorite that I have heard so far, with a song sampling Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, how can you go wrong? Also includes Slut featuring vocals by Anna from Luxt.

Mortiis-The Smell of Rain. Newest release by Mortiis and one that I just recently picked up.It is basically a soundtrack for mental decay and the struggle to cope with it.

TooL-Aenima. What can I say about this album and TooL in general that hasn't already been said 1000 times? An amazing album by an amazing band.

Wolfsheim-Spectators. I love this album. Dealing with everything from drug addiction to loss to finding strength that was never known,it has something for everyone to identify at one point or another.

Cradle of Filth-Damnation and A Day. I am a diehard fan of Cradle of Filth, but I happen to think that this is the best so far. They expanded their sound with the use of a full orchestra. It tells the story from beginning to end of the battle between Heaven and Hell, from the standpoint of Lucifer.

The Cure-Greatest Hits. I picked the greatest hits album because it includes a lot of my favorite songs, and although it leaves out quite a few, this is the one that is in my cd player most often. Also, the included acoustic disc is great.

Damn,listing only 10 was a bitch.Next time,ask for 100 and I might have an easier time. :P

Green Day - Dookie | This album has so many good songs on it. It's definately their best.

They Might Be Giants - Flood | This album has a lot of wierd songs on it.

Dir en Grey - Gauze | Its another one of those "bunch of great songs" sort of things.

Dir en Grey - Vulgar | I have found it impossible to get sick of this album.

Less than Jake - Welcome to Rockview | its so very skariffic.

Thrice - Illusion of Safety | It kicks severe ass.

Godsmack - Faceless | If i want to hear something seriously hardcore, i put this in my cd player....

Powerman 5000 - Tonight the Stars Revolt! | ...if I can't find this album.

Hopelessly Devoted to You Vol. 4/5 | Well...its not an album per se...but is a good mix for like, four bucks.

Guilty Gear X Hard Rock Tracks | If you have ever played ggx, you understand. And if you haven't, go buy it. RIGHT NOW.

Yeah, my list sucks, but its 9 am. Im not suppossed to wake up for, like, 5 more hours.

1) Dir en grey - Kisou
The songs are just wonderful. There are songs like 24ko Cylinders, Bottom of the Death Valley, and -mushi- which have really great lyrics (most of their songs do...one of the many reasons Kyo rocks). There are also songs such as Pink Killer and Filth which are just fun to listen to.

2) Plastic Tree - Puppet Show
One of the great things about Plastic Tree (their old stuff anyway) is how happy their songs sound until you listen to the lyrics. Like one song, is about a pill addict and how he slowly drives himself into insanity...but it just sounds so happy...its a little creepy. Puppet show, however, has Monophobia and Sangatsu Itsuka...both are a little darker in sound and are my personal favorites from the band.

3) Dir en grey - Gauze
Ah how I miss the older Dir en grey days. This album has everything from a tragic romance song...to a song of how a baby would view its own abortion...to song from the view of a murderer who can't deal with his past and is driven to insanity and then suicide. I really can't find anything bad to say about Dir en grey's older stuff.

4) hide Best -Psychommunity-
hide's first memorial album. It has all the best songs...from Pink Spider to Breeding. Its one of the albums I will listen to non-stop for weeks at a time.

5) X Japan - Blue Blood
X Japan didn't have many albums...but the ones they DID have were all unbelievable. I pick Blue Blood because although it doesn't have my favorite songs on there (Silent Jealousy and Scars) it does have Rose of Pain, Orgasm, Blue Blood and Kurenai. And we can't forget "Endless Rain" used in the anime of "X" (X/1999 in America).

6) Malice Mizer - Bara no Seidou
Malice Mizer...is just...wow...
Klaha has a great voice...its very opera-esque. Plus...it isn't often that a band can pull of organs with electric guitars so very nicely.

7) Dir en grey - Vulgar
Although this album is great...it does sadden me than they sound a little less 'Dir en grey' in this. Its not bad...I just miss the days of Gauze. Obscure and Red[em] alone make this worth getting, in my opinion. The first press came with the Obscure pv (like a music video) which is really...different...than most others. By that I mean lotsa blood, vomit, bondage, etc. I really think I enjoy it more than I should.

8) Kagerou (self titled album)
If any band was to replace Dir en grey...I would have to say these guys are it. I would go in depth...but they are to good for someone as lame with words as I am to describe.

9) Pierrot - CELLULOID
A rather sort album at only 6 songs...its still their best I think. Kirito is really a master of lyrics...and this album proves it...especially in "Adolf" which is about the Holocaust in the twisted view of Hitler himself.

10) Theatre of Tragedy - A Rose for the Dead
This song...is just...wow...
Go find this somewhere now. The only reason it wasn't higher on the list is because its a single. (I haven't heard any of their other stuff)

Here's my top ten favorites AT THE TIME:

1.) His Infernal Majesty-"Greatest Lovesongs Vol. 666": Because "The Beginning of The End" is quite possibly one of the greatest songs that Valo has written.

2.) Daniel Lioneye-"The King of Rock'n Roll": Lily Lazer sounds like Elvis and Ville Valo is on percussion/drums...how can you go wrong?

3.) Terror-"One With The Underdogs": I'm a fan of Hardcore and these guys represent it well, in my opinion.

4.) The Cure-"Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me": It has "Catch" on it and I'm addicted to that song right now.

5.) Switchblade Symphony-"Sweet Little Witches": They're one of the few bands that can pull-off a terrific live album.

6.) Balzac-"Beyond the Darkness": Japanese Punk kicks-ass, and they're probably my favorites.

7.) DevilDriver-"DevilDriver": Dez Fafara sounds so much better with these guys.

8.) The Agony Scene-"The Agony Scene": Not a definite reason for my liking this album, it just has a lotta' catchy songs on it.

9.) Superjoint Ritual-"A Lethal Dose of American Hatred": Phil Anselmo is a bad-ass...and well, you gain so much respect for this band once you've seen them live. That and Hank III is now a member of SJR. ;D

10.) The Kovenant-"S.E.T.I.": I'm a much bigger fan of their older works but I'm lovin' the song "Via Negativa" a lot.

Well, this list will change because my tastes variate quite frequently.
