It's a gothic literary joke based on the writings of the Great H.P. Lovecraft. arguably one of the great horror writers of all time.
If you enjoy reading some old school horror check yourself out some Lovecraft. Most any of his books are short stories or novelettes, and in such easy reads. If you really start to dig on some lovecraft and re-read that tract it's hilarious. If you don't know lovecraft you'll probably never "get" it
BTW - The "Necronomicon" is a Lovecraftian joke. It's not a real book, at least in the sense true magical text. Also known as the Al Azarab in Lovecrafts stories, it was a magical religious text that warns of the coming of the elder gods and spells on how to hold closed the gates between the plane of the elder gods and that of earth. It was a part of lovecrafts mythos someone got the bright idea to cash in on. Somewhere along the line some Lovecraft fans have managed to convince the world that the book is "real". thus creating one of the greatest practical jokes in literary history. (wasn't too hard of one to pull off as the Al Azarab does exist. The two are however not the same book)
