i almost posted this to gothgeek, however i think there are enough gaming geeks here to appreciate this:

someone's building a free 3d online RPG, called planeshift. that's right, free-as-in-beer. and judging from the screen shots provided, it may rival evercrack at some point in time.

now, i know that it won't ever be evercrack, and it certainly won't replace it. but i have a feeling it may appeal to those who don't feel like - or can't afford - shelling out a monthly fee to go kill rats and orcs. ;)

oh yeah, and best of all, it's GPL'd (re: open source), and multi-platform.

Bleh Evercrack sucked, UO was a bit more interesting, but I'll give this one a shot when they get it up

i like evercrack. a lot. i don't like windows.

i don't mind buying a game, but paying monthly to use it? well, i'm stuck with it in EQ, but this project gives me a bit of hope.

i personally like the model ID software uses - you buy a game, and then you connect to servers for free. it's seemed to work for them.

I usually stick to tabletop, but this could get me interested in online gaming.

Could be interesting. In my UO days i discovered that the player-based (FREE!) shards generally had players with more maturity, higher IQ's, and better role-play skills than the pay server. Free is gooooooooood. lol

i never played UO - but my brother, and several of his friends, were junkies.

the graphics are admittedly what draw me on this project. UO and it's ilk had some pretty shoddy visuals. a free immersive gaming platform with eye-candy, though... oh me, oh my.

Shall I put forth the bill to start our very own KnoxGoth guild? Anyone second the notion?
Can I get an Amen?!
