Yes the remake whips ass.

I went in not expecting something decent, and basically the same fucking movie....i was surprised.

Perhaps if more people did that, movies would be better.

But i mean..REALLLY:

1. Drill Sgt. Hartman as the Sheriff. i wanted him to be like....DO YOU SUCK DICKS PRIVATE PYLE? (and i got that on the extras) but, i was still happy with the very excellent lines he did get in (which were all improv)

2. The Suicide shot was badass...then i watched the original no cut shot.....which was specfuckingtacular.

3. The Story, was, while completely different...still excellent.

They didn't go in trying to remake the movie, IMHO they went in and made up a different movie, in the same setting as the original. I mean, there are like no real conincidences in the film beetween the two at all really.

Plus the 2nd disc has a documentry on Ed Gein, the inspiration for the movie....and it has real deal old ass movie clips of his last victim, where the cops opened a door, and found her hanging by her ankles, decapitated, and cut like a cow, with all her vital organs removed. Fucking sick, but neat.

i saw the ed gein movie and it has a lot of clips from his arrest and what have you

Rented this last night. You know, looking back on it, I think that part of what made the original so memorable was that it was pretty much the first of its kind that received wide circulation. It got a lot more mention and play than, say, Herschal Gordon Lewis' splatter flicks, which were pretty unknown in comparison. A chainsaw killer? A family of cannibals? Pretty stark and frightening shit at the time.

Not anymore. This was just another slasher flick with some decent gore and boring characters you are neither invested in nor care for. The only interesting part of this movie was the family dynamic, which was well done except for ratboy. The movie wasn't shit. It was well shot and had a few nice effects. It just did not have the impact of the original, and if you cannot accomplish that, you shouldn't do a remake. BTW, I thougt that the new Dawn of the Dead handled that well. It was a completely different sort of impact, but it was memorable on its own merits.

The extras were nice...I liked the deleted scenes with the explanations for the cuts, and the "making of" and Ed Gein documentary were pretty good.

but i saw the new leatherface and he looked silly
plus there is now way you can recreate or even top the look and feel of the original
the grainy dark film and spaced out sound fx are 90% of what makes that move a classic

I actually have to agree with you travis, that is what makes the original what it is.

Gein isn't scarry, or even what i would call a mass murderer- I just found his story intresting...of course i'm into looneys and all that jazz...psychology is one of my favorite things in the world.

yeah i have to say the addition of the gein material will probably coax me into buying it

I saw this in the theater, and liked it for what it was. Definitely not the remake that DOTD was, but still a decent flick. And I also enjoyed the musical score by Marilyn Manson. On a scale of 1 to 10, I would probably give it a good 6.5 to 7 for all it's worth. The original seemed much more brutal for it's time, but the new one was fun to watch as a fan of the classic. I'm still anticipating a retelling of the first "Friday the 13th".
