I was taking lessons before moving that I am hoping to resume soon with a new instructor.

Until I can find someone that clicks with me, I would like to find some assistance from other gothic guitar players. What I'm curious about is, is there a gothic progression that is similar to the I-IV-V in blues music?

Would depend on wht key you are playing in, and what "style" of goth sound you are attempting to achieve.
Would have to agree a bit with Iblis about the blues. Blues is the basic root to all Rock music.

hey mang. if you want to sound gothic and hevvy play in drop D.

what u hav to do is tune your low E string so that teh 7th frette sounds lyke an opn A.

their are roughly 5 cords u cn play in this tuning. they covr all teh notes in the tooltabian mode. they are 0-3-5-10-. the fifht cord is where u go

it only really works in taht position. justin frum TOOL uses it lots nd it sounds wicked good if you tremollow pick it with a pete cornish wahstortion petle.

oh yea man if u want to sound a gothic tone put the gain at 1, lost teh treble and bass and dime teh mids. throw ur amp into ur bathroom and turn all the faucets on and flush the tooilet and run the shower. then plug your '82 sqeuieur into it and it will sound all middy like and thin. then play

Ok, I am a gothic guitarist so here is my first lesson.

1, study up on blues guitar and Reggae.

What reggae?! thats not goth! a lot of glam stuff is really borrowed from Reggae guitars and also old school goth. Listen to Bauhaus - "She's in Parties" and tell me Danial Ash isn't playing Reggae riffs.

also, Wha peddles and LOTS of reverb are your friends.

Stick to mostly Minor scales when coming up with riffs and leads.

Focus more on lead style than rhythm. More often than not, keyboards, drums, and bass provide most rhythm.

I have developed my style mostly from Danial Ash, Rick Agnew, and Robert Smith.

Don't shy away from your mids and highs. Staying low is probably the easiest way to sound dark, but an accomplished guitarist can make even cock rock leads sound evil. The problem with Nu-Metal bands that always use Drop D is that they stick with their lows on every damn instrument. So it sounds muddy and monotonous. You have a huge range of notes you can play on a 6 string, use it to your advantage.

As far as Drop D. Its all how you play it. If you come up with a cool riff in key of D, and want to drop an octave, your set there. Take Ramones - "Pet Cemetery" for example. It in no way sounds like Korn or any other nu-metal. But it is in Drop D. I'm personally not a big fan of Drop D, but it can be useful.

Anyway, what do you call a guy with no talent who hangs out with the band?

No offense to anybody, but to me, saying 'I want to learn gothic guitar' is like saying 'I want to learn to drive like my grandmother.'

If you're really serious about guitar, then I advise that you take classical guitar lessons for a few years. After that, all else will seem pretty easy and you'll be able to sound any damn way you want.

And sure, learn the blues, rock, metal, and all the other fun stuff too. Good luck.
