Vespa / Scooter Info?

With gas prices rising so much so fast, I've given a lot of thought to giving up my very safe car for something a little more... exciting. And economical.
I'll admit it... I'm a geek, and I think Vespas (the vintage designs and the recent return to the classic style) are wonderful.
Does anyone have any advice, about place to find used Vespas in good/working condition? I know there aren't many Vespas or scooters in the Knoxville area, period so I'm not very hopeful.
I've already been out to Destination Motors past Farragut already. I love the new model they have in (I think it's the ET4?) but I simply can't afford $3-4k for a new one. Not to mention, I don't think the car will bring that much.
My plan is to buy my friend's used car for winter and rainy days, then spend the rest of the money my car brings on a scooter. If anyone has any advice or info, I'd really appreciate it!

Vespas are super groovy and i dig the hell out of them but i cant put that much down on one either
but there are some options
if you like the PX150 or the vintage 70s Vespas, you might look into Stellas (
http://www.genuinescooters.com) they are available at a place in nooga called Scenic City Scooters (
http://www.sceniccityscooters.com)
they are EXACT replicas of vintage 70s vespas and they only run about $2800
your other option is to come look at one of my scooters, i have a chinese made 150CC wildfire touring edition scooter that i may be looking to unload for well under $1000 (gathering up my down payment for a stella) they get about 80 to 100 miles per gallon and run about 50 to 55mph. (
http://www.wildfiremotors.com)
if your intersted in a stella, ask for jen and tell her jay sent you, if your interested in one of mine just leave a msg or drop me an email

Are there any special license requirements like motorcycles have for vespas? I've always been kinda curious about getting one to ride back and forth to work on, but I'm kinda afraid of what would happen if I got onto Pellissippi and only moved 55mph.

in tennessee you have to have a motorcycle lic. for anything over 125cc . and you have to have at least 200cc to get on an interstate road (your best bet is to get a 150 or 200 and stick to alternate roads) i can get pretty much anywhere on my 150 and never hit an interstate at all

I have a scooter. I think it was 600$, from pep boys. There's no license, insurance, or tags required. It gets 120 MPG, and goes up to 45 (depending on your weight)
Generally, if you drive backroads, this is perfect, and it's street legal. Not interstate (obviously)...but it's no different than you riding a bike.
I also have a car though.
