People get a Life.

HELP ME!!! I live in the bible belt. I really hate when a group of people (mostly Rednecks) tell me that I should be like them. Just because it is what everybody else is like. Even places of work won't let you be your self. I am an adult. I pay bills just like everyone else. No percings or tattoos or even have your hair long (for men). Why is it like this? I can do my job. I can look the way I want and still do a good job and be a nice person. But when I go somewhere people just have to stare.
The reason is people just don't stop and think about things. I hate alot of things that other people like. But I don't judge them or tell them that's wrong. I think as long as you are nice and neat it should not matter. A person soul is what should matter. There are some people at my work that think I am strange. And their are some that think I am a cool guy. Love those that love me. And to those that don't GET A LIFE.....

Perhaps you should take it as a compliment to draw such attention. No doubt some of those who stare are simply unable to deny their instant attraction, while others are no doubt envious of the freedom of expression you represent to their relatively unobtrusive mainstream esthetic sensess.
Of course, they could just be ignorant inbred hicks, but I like to try and think a little better of my fellow man.. at least when it doesn't directly affect my own welfare.

Well, I could understand a job that required no (metal) piercings, if one had a job where one had to pass through a metal detector constantly. Or maybe if it had an extreme chance of having a piercing ripped out. Or any number of other logical (logical is a key word here) reasons for denying employees the ability to poke holes in themselves.
( The same basic concept applies to long hair or tattoos - a company should look out for its own ass, where lawsuits might apply. )
But Christ on a crutch! If these aren't the cases, they're being fundamentalist bastards.
Nowhere in the Bible did it say, "If you look different than n number of people, well, fuck you unkindly."
*Is glad he works for a company that doesn't care if he grow his hair out long.*

there is a time and a place for everything. some places do require a "business professional" appearance. in situations like that, on top of your job, you are getting paid to uphold a certain appearance. in some circumstances this is to make sure that your employees are at least somewhat responsible and care to a certain degree for their job. sort of like a filter. in any situation, regardless of surroundings, any typical repeating response that you receive you are doing to yourself. in that regard, you have 2 options. not care, or change.

"Is your own personal sense of style worth less than 80K a year?"
"Fuck yeah!"
"You're hired."
If paid enough, I think I'd shave my head and wear a toupee made of my own pubic hair. That way, I might look like a dork, but I could afford to have anyone who said so wind up becoming South America's next great source of potted meat.

No place I've been to have offered me that much, and trust me half of that 80k will go to the therapist.
the price of expression.

Almost always have worked for myself. On the rare occasions I haven't, I dressed the way I wanted and there wasn't a problem. I even showed up for an interview in my black trench and sunglasses and got the job anyway. Most of the jobs I got fed up with being asked to something which was immoral, unethical or illegal, which led me to slack off and turn up the attitude until I was fired. This lifestyle has meant sometimes not knowing where the next money was coming from and sometimes making a butt-load of money all at once and having to make it last. There are always risks but the freedom is worth it. No time clocks, no boss, no bullshit and setting my own schedule is worth a lot more than a steady paycheck. Yes, I've had to arrange my life in what many people consider a very strange way, but there is something to be said for being content with what is earned personally and honorably rather than selling one's soul for currency.
