Flame Baiters turn people away. Check out the Metroblab sometime. Nobody wants to go to a forum that is heavily populated with flame bait. Wait the majority of people anyway.

Actually, these days the situation has changed a lot. Now, on the 'Blab, the generic Scary flamers are ignored or at least not taken seriously, just kind of accepted as background noise.

The real problem now is that many of the most intelligent posters on there have a real passive-aggressive need to get into "serious" arguments, in an unnecessarily aggressive fashion, rather than simply chat about things, like friends sitting around a bar table.

Even people who basically agree with many of your ideas will, on MetroBlab, still get pedantic and haughty about how "wrong" you are when all you were doing was making a post that was just for idle amusement, not serious college-level deate.
