gothic band forming
OK, Here is the Pitch

I want to build a touring Goth band
The idea is to have a classic four-piece band
The music will be a version of Gothic Rock with a cross over edge to it.

Think of mixing Bauhaus, The Cure meets London after midnight with the polish of Wolfsheim

A very dark ambient bass driven sound with heavy keyboard layered with very light guitar interwoven
Basically the music will be very textured and melodic

Here is what I’m offering to the right candidates
It has some drawbacks and positives aspects

All candidates will be male, between the ages of 21 – 26
Have a certain gothic edge look, Not fat, dress in black
Be prepared to send photos, some experience playing live helpful, talent (basically be able to deal with direction a must) when it comes to music my motto has always been less is always more

Open to recording, open to touring for money
Open to shooting videos, open to a stage look and show

I’m looking for
Bassist
Keyboards / Vocalist

I have a drummer

I also own a beautiful PA, two double 15â€

ok some advice
from a label owner / a touring musician / and a music fan
do with it what you will
none of this is an attack on you

your webpage could use a new designer
the images are subpar at best
you present yourself as a professional in your post
but your webpage doesn't speak the same

most of the links don't work
ie:
your lyrics links
or mp3 links (which are the most important part right , you want people to hear your shit)

i waited all damn day for this video just to hear your stuff

so here we go on to that

you should shut up and let the girl sing
honestly

and if she's no longer working with you
find someone else that can sing
and find one that can write lyrics as well
because

this:

Sitting here in my modular sound machine
Fuck the world and forget the police
I got to drive at a very high speed
Put the cd in and I get mean

sounds like 6th graders wrote a song inspired by "i can't drive 55"

the song bytch
it's not bad , musicly
that is to say the hooks are there , and it's pretty solid

but
i tried to tune out the vocals and the lyrics all together

also whoever mixed the track made the vocals way to hot
they burry the dynamic range of the rest of the music

i couldn't find any way other than that video to hear your stuff
much less buy any of it

then there is the image issue
quit worrying so much what people look like and dress like

gothic edge look, Not fat, dress in black

robert smith is fat and wears hockey jerseys

if your gonna lose say
a good vocalist
or bassist
dont' lose them because they don't dress like you
or might be overweight

as a music fan i dont' give a shit what the bassist of my favorite band looks like
as long as he's good and adds something to the band

that should be the only thing that concerns you
beyond that
you need to be able to get along with them in a van for weeks on end
and be sure they won't flake in the middle of the tour
or sit on their ass while you hump gear
these things are all way more important than black clothes

other than that
i don't like the band name
dead sea surfers
i'd never buy anything with that name
and the dead sea surfers logo
the D with the SS logo in the middle

i'd change that too

it's gonna be hard enough for you to do anything being a goth band
but to have people think your nazi's (which you may or may not be)
will only hurt you even more

again do what you will with this input
it's a personal attack
just giving you some insight from other angles

esp from a music fan point of view
and a label owner point of view

i scan through demos and webpages day in and day out
and something like this would have hit the trash bin before i ever even heard it
just because of the presentation

i usually don't go on like this

but after your initial post
i had to see what you guys were doing

hope some of this helps

I have to say.....

I honestly don't understand why you are being so strict about looking for people! There are many females out there with lots of talent!

What is so wrong about being a chick!

I'm not currently looking for anything, but, as a female, and a musician, this is offensive!

I mean, c'mon, do you seriously think girls can't do it???

That doesn't quite sound like an ideal time frame I would think. I mean bands that have been playing together for quite some time take like a full year or more making a new album. Usually, the quickie album is done by a band that is part of a fad or phase that is trying to cash in before people move on to the next one.

Being a smartass without offering advice was not being terribly helpful was it? My first impression after reading your list of requirements was that you already know exactly what you want this band to look and sound like. That is going to turn off other creative and talented people who dislike having parameters dictated to them. You don't just want a bunch of studio musicians do you?

Anywho, I'll take a cue from Recluse and offer some helpful advice: Give it some time after moving and meet some fellow musicians. Maybe you will meet some interesting people who have good ideas and are receptive to yours, and the dynamics will happen. If not, you can always go the Reznor / Thirwell route and make your own music.

I could not agree more with onibubba and abreeskye, and would have to add that the best goth bands usually dont try to sound like other bands or even try to sound goth, but just express themselves and also try to create something new. alot of the bands you mentioned are good but older and other bands have already made great strides beyond what they have done, so to try rehash what they did I just dont think would be very good.

I forgot...are you looking to make a new band...or for Americas Next Hot Topic Model?

And you apparently already sorta had a band called Dead Sea Surfers or you wouldn't have a web site, right? So did you kick them out? OMG maybe it's Menudo!!! :boing:

After reading the ad, I realized certain things. That everyone has an opinion and thats what a forum is all about. People expressing their opinions.

Seems as this person has a particular image they are looking for,
Young Male, in shape, musician. I don't think that's so wrong, what about females maybe they have had bad experiences with females in bands?

As far as the website goes, They say they will begin working on it soon, which reads as it being not updated and perhaps has not been updated in some time.

As far as people taking direction, maybe that means people who are mature and want to do something.

I'm sure there are a hundred different ways to get musically where you want to go. So how come everyone in the world hasn't made it?

The guy in here that keeps promoting his Record company.
What makes a good record?

What makes a good band?

What makes a good website?

I think your opinion will be your opinion. I think working links and songs to hear. Hmmm, doesn't it say that they have songs posted on their fan page? at yahoo?

so even thou one thing may not be perfect as they said it wasn't, do you think maybe it's hard to publish media without a band if your forming a band?

As far as the older recordings words many people have words that suck. I'm sure I could lookj though all the words of the bands your promoting on your label and find something really shitty?

As far as the female vocals being bad on the Dead Emotion song Bytch, Didn't this person say they were getting out of that band? and was just trying to claim that as a point of reference.

Seeing as I have been playing the guitar and sining for some time I understand that people naturally react negatively to someone trying to precisely describe what they are looking for.

Lets just say I tyhink this person is looking for some Male musicians motivated into making something regardless on what the outcome may be. I think people are reading to deeply and seeing this as some form of hit against really fat goths or female musicians. I mean I can think of some really great female musicians?

anyway, everyone has an opinion, obviously people have never tried to put a band together, I myself personally have never played in a band where I thought every person was knowledgeable of the gothic subculture. It be like me being goth and dating a normal person? Yea that's going work in the long run?

there are to many ways to answer these questions
but i think you took my point out of context
i wasn't promoting my label
i was advising what it is i don't like to see when i check out a band
as
a label owner

As far as the website goes, They say they will begin working on it soon, which reads as it being not updated and perhaps has not been updated in some time.

i didn't read that
and most label owners won't

As far as the older recordings words many people have words that suck. I'm sure I could lookj though all the words of the bands your promoting on your label and find something really shitty?

i'm sure i would
and i'm sure that's the case for just about all bands
the point is the bad shit doesn't get released
and shouldnt be glorified or recreated

As far as the female vocals being bad on the Dead Emotion song Bytch,

well i said they were pretty good
.... are you sure you read my post

I think working links and songs to hear. Hmmm, doesn't it say that they have songs posted on their fan page? at yahoo?

i don't know
i didn't read that
i saw the mp3 links
that didn't work
and at that point threw this band into my mental garbage can

most label owners would do the same

It be like me being goth and dating a normal person? Yea that's going work in the long run?

are you 14 years old

Lets See, Mr record Label, basically said,

He doesn't read the fine print.

Go Figure?

And then tries to explain away

his judgemental views

by saying ,

well, hey,

I didn't see this or that, But I'm a big record label exec. and I'm important in my own mind and your fourteen?

hey, Why don't you go all the way and tell us who is on that fabulous record label of yours, I'm dying to hear all the nationally known touring acts that perform for your holiness from atlanta,
is that an oxy moron.

I can tell this is going be a list of winners,

just remember,

I'm to busy to click on your link that you provided, but basically, this is your moment to promote all of the wonderful bands by putting everyone else down who is in a quest to build a goth band, so you go right ahead. We will all be sitting right here patiently waiting for you to guide us to elixir of life, since you have now deemed yourself, God of this post, and of music, reading comprehension, websites, and pretty much everything else you can highlight and take out of general context and I almost feel like I'm at a carnival with all this age guessing stuff.

Basically what you said in your first post was that these people shouldn't be so judgemental and then you lay your own judgemental stamp down upon them. That's great. you should be proud...

We need more people in here like you to guide us, so we can all be judgemental narrow minded and bascially opinionated to the point of attacking other people by highlighting what they say, Try doing it without the highlight because, I can really read and comprehend things without them being rehashed in that borish manner.

Wow, and lastly: Your opinion that someone else has an opinion, is that they are 14, that was colorfully lame.

But please, please I am dying for you to come in here now and lamefully highlight everything I have said so we can all see your further foolishness come to light in this highlighting manner in which you correspond

let me see I can probably do it for you, naaaa, just make sure you take in alot of oxygen first

who are you now the judge of who can and cannot post to this post?

two different people who registered in the same day so far only to post and argue in this topic on the same side?

Well considering that out in the real world, yes. Time is a commodity, even tho I'm not some big shot corporate record label who has minions to look over the fine print and then run it through the red tape so I can hear a sample and give the ole yea or nay without knowing shit about the band or even an indie type label who for the most part have to work their asses off and may have a few minutes to hear a track or two inbetween 10 or so other projects that they have going on at the moment.
As for the 14 year old comment well I think its fucking hilarious because its stabbing at the ultimate drama producer "gother than thou" coz you know we shouldn't date outside our species (gasp) for our bleak hearts *staples hand to forehead* and excessive eyeshadow (le sigh) obviously prove that we are superior to rednecks (ok that is a given) republicans (ok that too, I should give up before I bury myself here [ooOOoo how goth]) and real people (Skip! Skip! Skip! [kudos to those that get that one])
