Post by sara! »

Hey Peeps we have a couple of shows this week. Please show some face. First
one this wed. we rock the old city with Atlantic Record’s Crazy Anglos, an
Atlanta success story. "This five-member funk/rap/rock/reggae group melds
the energy and rawness of a punk band with the ability to deliver complex
and varied songs. Anyone who has had the opportunity to see the Anglos live
can attest to the fact the band is aptly named – these are some crazy white
boys."

By Doug...Born To Skank

My dad kicked me out of the house at 6. He didn't realize that it only takes
a little over 2 hours to drive to Roanoke and I had 4 hours to do it in.
Lucky for me, I took my time and got WAY FREAKIN' LOST in Roanoke for about
30 or so minutes. Either way I found the place. I didn't realize that it was
over 21. So after a lot of politicing and an act of Congress (special thanks
to Congressman Boucher), I got in to stay. Thanks to Dick for doing the
dirty work and for paying my way.

The place was pretty cool... It was really small, I expected something
similiar to the Factory. It had this odd beach/fisherman theme. It was like
going to a show at Long John's but without the hush puppies or the kickass
paper hat.

At 10:30 Stations picked it up. I had seen them about a billion years ago in
Roanoke but couldn't really remember anything about them. I liked them a
lot... I tasted a sprinkling of Oi! which I have to love. I was a little
disappointed that there was no encore. The guitarist started packing up and
I thought he was bluffing. He wasn't. That was ruder than a Specials album.
They have a couple really great songs... One was something like "Piss Away"
or something like that... It's on the Taco Pimp compilation. Sorry, I'm
horrible with names. Either way, great set.

Shortly after that, Scullsoup wound up that 16 year old punk rock motor and
the crowd was deafened by the diesel roar. The audience was a little bit
disappointing... not in quantity, but quality. I had a feeling that they had
no idea what they were getting into. I definitely got a college kid vibe
from them. And they DEFINITELY were not dancers. (much less skankers
unfortunately) But they were obviously enjoying it. The old fans sang along
and the new fans bobbed their heads.

Scullsoup did a set that was about an hour and a half long. They even
covered Poor George, a personal favorite. In between a couple of the songs
there was the inevitable Scullsoup bad humour and Aerosmith cover snippet. I
believe that it was Steve Visine who said that they were changing their name
to Satan's Stool... and he ain't shitting ya.

There were a couple people who were obviously had their eyes glued to
Steve's Flying V as he would break the limits of the minor pentatonic scale
and pull out the Van Halen finger tap. I think that I and several others
were in fear that the guitar would pop like a ganglion cyst.

A friend of mine listened to a Scullsoup album a while back and the first
thing she said was "Damn, that bass has his shit together." That's a
horrible understatement. Poop Johnson not only has his shit together, but he
IS the shit. It is my guess that's the root of his first name. That man can
do no wrong as long as he has a bass in his hand

Tartool was off the wall doing the unexpected with every turn which old
school Soup Heads may find almost expectable. Cracking whitty quips
concerning 3/4 of all people making up 75% of the population. he was
obviously was not only on top of his game but had his flag planted there for
years before hand.

If there is one man that can bond these brutish antics into a rock and roll
masterpiece, he would be Vanbuscar. The man never ceases to amaze me... from
rolling across the make shift dance floor to tearing apart the drums on "Who
Gives A Fuck" to the ceaselessly amusing miming of his lyrics. They rocked
out until 1 and I was out. A long ride home but well worth it. Kudos to the
bands, the young lady who turned the other cheek after finding out I was 18,
Dick for helping me get in, and to the music lovers who dug it all.
