Idea? Could we help Katrina victims?

This hasn't been super thought out yet, but should we make an effort to do something to help the people who got displaced by the hurricane?
FEMA is not sounding to hopeful as to being able to house the multitudes, and the Red Cross is apparently trying to get 125 volunteers per location per day for assistance.
What I was thinking about:
Now, I am pretty poor, but I would dig through my cabinets to help.
Hell, I could probably house a goth chickie for a few days. We could adopt a homeless goth collectively.
Or maybe just donate some change. Whatever.
All I have heard though is that all the major authorities are calling this the worst thing yet (in America anyway), so maybe we can help.
Thoughts?

Giving money would probably be the best thing to do. We can donate directly to the Red Cross for their disaster relief services. We have 5 or 6 folks where I work that have family in the hardest hit areas and we're trying to come up with something to do for them. But for just general help, donating to the Red Cross means they will be able to help more people. And God knows, they need all the help they can get right now.

Agreed! I know that money will be the easiest way of helping because the major issue is building reconstruction and clean up. From most of the pictures NOLA looks like a lumber yard. They may also need food stuffs but until I see a charity that can make sure that they get it and it just doesn't sit in a warehouse I will just stick to funds. And you know I am always up for housing gothic types or even some of the voodoo folk. We would have plenty to talk about.

The company that I work for is doing a "matching contribution" to the point that it will match whatever employees donate to the Red Cross for the Hurricane Relief effort. That is the route that I am going at this time.

I think it's a really awesome idea.
There is a girl I work with that moved herself and her kids here last year after the hurricanes. They basically had nothing because it destroyed their house and everything in it...and they weren't even living on the coast.

Here's what I did in the early part of Katrina's aftermath.
I went to the dollar store with 20 bucks. Bought 10 dollars worth of cheap flashlights, 10 dollars worth of batteries. I dropped 'em off at the red cross. I figured that would be an item not sent by most people but would bring much comfort to those trapped in structures that were flooded and dark, and at that time, still subject to looting and gangs.
