A group of friends and I saw this at the midnight show opening night. I have to say for being a 3 hour epic it doesn't miss a beat, and constantly keeps your attention. I honestly don't see how removing anything to the film would have made it any better, and I'm glad the studio didn't force Jackson into making several cuts. The film wouldn't have been as effective if they had.
You might want to hold your bladder if you go see it, or else you will indeed miss something.
It's by far the most violent PG-13 movie I've ever seen. Not much blood or gore, just harsh, brutal violence. The action, is totally over the top. The fact that characters are being knocked around all over the place like rag dolls, and not losing limbs or breaking bones is not at all feasible, but if you can get beyond that, the action is mind blowing. There is one long sequence that must last nearly an hour that is just a whirlwind of CG action, and it totally works.
The film has some of the best CG to date, and the green screen matting with the live actors works really well too.
The acting was pretty good. Jack Black is always great. Naomi Watts had that "Jack from 'Lost' " look throughout the whole movie. You know the one. Is she surprised? Is she scared? Is she angry? Always the same face for all those emotions. If you can get past that, meh, she pulls off Ann Darrow pretty well. She's a hotty so who cares anyway.
I really didn't go in with any expectations, I mean it's a remake of a classic and American mythology. You know the story, and you know what is going to happen in the end. I came out truly impressed though.
All in all it's a milestone film and one you MUST see in the theatre to truly appreciate. It's made to be seen on the big screen and well worth the full ticket price.

I give it 8 out of 10 stars.

I planned on seeing it. It's hard to islike Peter Jackson. Grabted htere are always technicalthings that he fucks up...but they are consistant, so I'm used to them now...

I'm pretty stoked to go and see it...
