Sewing Machine

Ok, so I really want one. Problem is I know nothing about them, and I have only operated one maybe twice. Any suggestions on brands, or types?

I think my Grandma has a Singer brand sewing machine, and it works pretty damn good... has an assload of different settings n "stitchtypes" (whatever the fuck that'd be called, i'm definitely not a professional sewer).... Which type of machine it is though is beyond me... I'm sure they have a decent, newer type ready to grab on the shelves at Wal-mart...

Couple of things to think about.
First, what do you want to do with it? Simple straight stitch sewing or fancy embroidery? Do you want a serger or one with computer hookups? Once you decide on what you want a machine to do, go to...
budget. You can spend less than $150 and get a decent machine that does basic stitches or a couple thousand and get one that will do everything but the dishes. If you're like me, $$$ are the biggest consideration.

If you don't have a machine at all and don't know anything about them it is probably best if you start with a regular sewing machine, and not a serger.
Secondly with a regular machine, it's probably more affordable to get a non-computerized one. That's what I have.
If you want a quality machine, I suggest going to sears and asking if they have had any machines that have been returned for sale that they will resale at a reduced price. Often what happens is that someone will come in and buy a machine, and not know how to adjust or change out the bobbin mechanisim, and return it. So they have their service department service it and the resell it at a reduced price.
I purchased a $500 machine for $300 about 5 years ago that way on the recommendation of a friend who had done the same thing. It was the highest end mechanical machine (non-computerized) that they had available. It works great to this day.

i bought a sewing machine when i was 12 for about $80 at walmart, its a brother machine. and 14 years later its still working. its a simple machine and it does the trick.
if you buy something inexpensive then you wont regret it if you decide sewing is not for you.

Yeah I think mine is a 100 dollar brother from walmart that my mom bought me. Not that I have ever really used it, but I'd say its what you should start with.
And now...to start sewing..lol.

Yea, that's probably what I'll do. I haven't used one since I was quilting when I was younger...

i never said i was a christian, actually i am pagan, i WAS a christian at one time, but that is history, thanx, ill talk to my mom and see if she has any suggestions

I got a super duper Brother machine just this past month. I am a novice considering I haven't sewn on a machine since college (that's right, 1992, BISHES). I LOVE THIS MACHINE. I can't stress that enough.
I looked up sewing machine review sites. They usually had links to where you could find the machines that were reviewed. I got this one due to the fact that there were few known issues with it, and many people said that they were able to start sewing on it immediately.
