What are the top 5 best bands/singers in the history of modern music? No, this is not a favorite band thread. NIN is my favorite, but they're not the best band out there. The criteria for BEST includes: musical prowess, ingenuity, superior lyrical content, and ability to withstand the test of time.
So, what are the top 5 BEST bands ever?

Not to some people...
True, this is based mostly on personal opinion. However, I'm interested in seeing what others consider to be superior.

I always try to differentiate what are personally my favorites with what is The Best. Some of what I like, I would never just recommend to someone right off the bat. But what I think is The Best, I would recommend without hesitation.
That being said, Junkie has a point as well: How can I not list my all time favorite band as The Best? I mean, they are my faves. Their music has influenced me personally more than anyone else's. How can that not be a consideration for greatness? So, my first pick also heads up my list of favorites.
The Best
1) Current 93 - Soundtrack of my life man. I've been listening to David Tibet since the mid 80's, and he and the Current are still evolving, musically and philisophically. I eagerly await their new album (their 50th or so, I've lost count) this May.
2) Pink Floyd - Early tinkerers and experiementers who could also create memorable soundscapes. Made the inaccessable accessable without caving in to the 4 Minute Single - for a while anyway.
3) Johnny Cash - The original prototype for the Story Teller - Tom Waits, Leonard Coen, Nick Cave all owe him a great deal. Possibly the only singer who may have been as influential in his final years as his early years.
4) The Ramones - I can't really say that I even consider them punk. Hell, no punk band sounds remotely like them. They were just rock and roll. Simple, short and sweet. In fact, I think the Ramones were the best rock and roll band...Ever.
5) Frank Zappa and the Mothers - Frank just was. Impossible to justify as one of the best because you love him or you just hate him. The man was a genius and a composer on par with classical masters. He also wrote Titties and Beer. Case closed.
And just for the hell of it...
My Personal Faves
1) Current 93
2) Nick Cave
3) Coil
4) Foetus
5) Einsturzende Neubauten

As for me personally (keep in mind, I have some of the most diverse listening tastes of anyone I've ever met...)
I would say that bands that have withstood time,...that I also enjoy...
Radiohead (don't give me shit because you don't like them, they've been around for over 10 years, and have a huge fan base. A better, more intelligent and educated fan based than most bands will ever have. fuck off)
Pink Floyd
The Beatles (you don't have to like them, but their music will probably continue for ever and ever.)
Hanson. haha. just kidding. -- The ramones
Johnny Cash
