Just curious, with all the bad stuff surrounding Vista currently, if anybody plans to upgrade to Vista or move to an alternative.

I'll probably stay around with XP until the majority of the bugs are worked out of Vista. By that time it should also be cheaper.

Yeah, some of the problems listed here look to be really annoying. I have an XP machine just for gaming. No need for Aero when all you do is launch one or two programs from the start menu. Everything else I do is on Linux.

if and when the time comes that i have to learn how to use vista's interface, i'll do it through vmware.

at first blush, i know that sounds incredibly slow and painful, but really, so does installing it on any hardware i own at the moment.

My opinion of Vista is that in it's current state, it is useless DRM ridden bloat ware intended to bring your system to it's knees. So, no, I won't be installing it on any machines I currently own.

haha! with vmplayer able to support opengl on some cards, and vmware tools being the godsend that it is, i won't even be doing that.

i'll just throw enough hardware power at a machine to run XP via vmware on a linux host, and say to hell with installing bug-ridden OS's directly on my hdd.

and a stack of ps3's sounds like exactly the thing to run that monster.

Vista robs you of your freedoms and privacy even more then XP. Don't ever think about downloading any music or movies that you didn't pay for. Copyright protection is a bitch, especially when Vista has a nice new program to help the entertainment industry stop piracy. Vista is a resource hog and a complete farce. More Mac compatible software and we can end the nightmare.

I looked over Vista quite thoroughly this weekend. Best way I can describe it: "pretty bloatware"

yea im gonna go to vista, soon as the hacks for copyrights are better and the glitches are fixed.
Every version of windows is gonna have the piracy shit now.
Its not going away.
And biz will always upgrade to the newest version of windows.
So IT people will always have to update.

well, some will.

the company i work for runs linux for their servers; in fact, all the IT people run linux on their workstations, as well. while sometimes we'll need to load XP into vmware to test against certain naughty OS quirks, it's a rare thing. the artistic folk and the business folk run macs.

and things just... work.

There is no always in this business. M$ hasn't always been around, and won't always be around.

Lots of companies are taking a serious look at alternatives, because vista is so bad.

I use Slackware for all things server/router/firewall concerned and 2003 standard on all my other boxes mainly because I work for an MS based company and that just makes things easier.. and the rest of the time they are just glorified EQ machines anyway.

I see absolutely no reason whatsoever to have anything to do with Vista. From what i have seen, there is no reason other than you just want to waste money for shits and giggles and feel the need to upgrade hardware.

I expect my installations of 2k3 will probably be supported still for quite some time... and I wouldn't be surprised to see support for XP return, though, who knows.

There is zero need for me to upgrade anytime soon. Besides the general rule of not getting a new M.S. OS until at least 1 or 2 service packs come out, XP does everything I need just fine. It's great for basic productivity, gaming and is unmatched when it comes to device drivers.

I just got a lappytop computer with Vista. My boyfriend is installing xp on his...I don't know what to dooooo.

I guess I should probably do the same.

well, since you've already paid the "windows tax", it's really tough to say. i mean, if you're dead-set on having a micro$oft OS, keep in mind that eventually they'll just stop supporting XP. meaning all the security holes and whatnots just won't be patched via their updating system.

so, if you don't notice any lag, or experience any other problems, it might be just as well to keep vista on there. after all, you can always install/have someone else install XP at later date, if you really feel the need.
