The Hancock Fabrics near the Kroger past Homberg is closing the store. I haven't gone yet but I'm sure there are some lovely cheap things to be had. They have fabric, sewing notions, house decor stuff, jewelry stuff, books, yarn, knitting and crochet stuffs etc.

Anyone know if the one out west near the dollar theater is closing too?

Have you heard about Walmart not carrying fabric and patterns soon? The lady in the craft section told me they would be phasing it out in April. Although I would rather go to Joann, or other places, it was so convenient to have right down the street.

No I'm not sure the final day, I'll try to find out soon though.

I don't think ALL the walmarts are getting rid of fabrics...

i forgot where i found it, but there was a leaked letter or memo to the press from a upper level meeting in walmart. Something about they want to shed their image of being a white trash super store, they will be getting rid of the hunting dept, fabrics, and one other dept(cant remember), by 2010. ill try to find the link.

I cannot imagine them getting rid of the hunting stuff. The guns and stuff are a big profit for them are they not?

i was very suprised myself, i talked with the general manager at the athens super walmart, who is a friend of my family, and she told me that she wasnt alowed to talk about it....i can understand them wanting to get a broader clientel, but just throwing around the term white trash, kinda pissed me off....oh yea the other dept was layaway, im batting 2 for 3....

The lady in crafts/fabric at Wal mart at Walker Springs said ALL fabrics and patterns. They will continue to sell sewing machines, and all other craft supplies. I'll ask her next time I see her if it will be a major sale or if it will just disappear..

And yeah....she told me she wasn't supposed to talk about it either. *snort*

the memo i was talking about just said fabrics, they will prob. keep the crafts dept, just not the fabrics....which is confusing to me, cause isnt fabrics part of crafts?

About the Walmart thing: It's horrible!

It's ALL walmarts, ALL fabric. Anything the salespeople had to cut? Will be gone. Everything else will still be there. I sent a letter to Walmart a few months or so ago, not that anyone will actually read it or anything :(

They said that the fabric takes up too much space and too much time for the employees.

It really pisses me off...because if I'd be in manic mode, staying up all night sewing...and needed something...I'd just go to walmart!!

The walmart in Oak Ridge...their fabric is already gone. I've talked to the walmarts around here (in the knoxville area) and they've said they will clearance it all out...starting at 50%, then 75%. But, they aren't doing this until they redo the stores. Oak Ridge was the one in most need of being redone, so it got it first.

About Hancock: NOOOOOO! Not another place I get my fabric!! Why are they going out of business??? Anyone know when, or when everything will go on sale?

Sigh. This makes me sad.

Hey Abree, have you checked out the Friends Sewing Center in Oak Ridge ( jackson square)? A girl I went to high school with and her mom opened it. They don't have lots of "cool" fabrics but they have a decent choice I guess. Plus they do sewing classes and such.

I've never been there! I'm definitely going to have to check it out!!!
