Voltaire on Fox?!

If it's not covered by one of those other categories, you should probably talk about it here. Be nice.

Voltaire on Fox?!

Post by Shadow Of The Fox »

Yep, Voltaire spoke out against one of those "goth murders" that has popped up, so I thought I'd post a link to it. Personally, I thought the stuff was just riotously funny.

I'm sick of people perpetuating the urban myth that Fox News is some kind of all-raging-Conservative, all-the-time outlet. A view usually espoused by people who never actually watch it.

Try this on: Bill O'Reilly, arguably the most famous Fox News anchor? He's in favor of decriminalizing marijuana.

Yeah, that's a typical Conservative view, right there.

So, what..? Because Bill "Shut up!" O'Reilly wants to decriminalize weed, this makes him a liberal?

Dude, i don't care if he came out tomorrow in defense of gay marriage, or supporting Obama... he's a conservative, obnoxious, and a twit. There is no doubt that Fox consistently gives the Conservative view one any story where they possibly can.

I support lowering funding and even closing down a lot of government based social services. Am I now a conservative?
The firemen came and broke through the chimney top. And me and Mom were expecting them to pull out a dead cat or a bird. And instead they pulled out my father. He was dressed in a Santa Claus suit. He'd been climbing down the chimney... his arms loaded with presents. He was gonna surprise us. He slipped and broke his neck. He died instantly. And that's how I found out there was no Santa Claus.

Yes, it makes him a liberal on certain social issues. He's a libertarian.

Spleen said Fox tears apart anyone "remotely liberal". I was just pointing out that that is provably false.

I think libertarianism is stupid.

Just my opinion, that's all.

Jack> You are "probably" wrong.

They do.

That's what the "Shut Up" nickname was about.

Libertarians are not liberals. They are conservatives. The only "socially liberal" policies they hold are those that can be shown to have a financially positive effect. He also supports banning gay marriage (something a lot of libertarians support), which actually goes directly against the "true" nature of libertarianism (or at least the party's stated mission).

It's not an issue of black and white, jack. It's not a matter of opinion.

If I'm standing on the north side of the Mexican border... just inches from crossing, I'm still in the US. Being "closer" doesn't put me *in* Mexico.

Political parties are divided into three general categories: liberal, moderate, and conservative. Each one of them has *some* view that could be put in a category outside of what would normally be expected, and each member even more so.

The libertarian party are conservative. They are right-wing.

Sure maybe they're not as conservative or far right as the Constitution Party or the Republicans, but they're still conservative.

It would be like saying that because the Greens support smaller government they're Conservative.

ARGH!

You can *not* be "both at the same time." This is not a matter of opinion, folks. It's factual.

You may have views on issues that are in all areas of the political spectrum, yes. Like I said, I believe in reducing funds to and eliminating certain social services. That's a very conservative point of view. But I'm far from a conservative.

Having a mixture of views on different issues is just plain healthy and normal. Most people do it. The ones who don't are seriously dangerous (or stupid).

You're saying that one cannot be socially liberal but fiscally conservative?

I agree 100 percent. Most libertarians I know are worse than most republicans I know. I don't understand how people don't see that they are conservative.

Plus I think its a total waste of a vote. I'd vote green but I know I'd be throwing my vote away. We have a two party system and its likely we'll have a two party system for many many more years. So you gotta vote with whats closer to home.

Like with any party, there's a lot of variation. Bill Maher, Dennis Miller, Rev. Ivan Stang, Robert Anton Wilson... lots of people are on the "more liberal" side of libertarianism... then you have guys like Neil Boortz and O'Reilly who are on the "more conservative" side.

But I would say that most true libertarians basically say "If it harm none, do what thou wilt." Now where have I heard that before...

Dear Jack,

You seem like an intelligent person. Please turn off your television and talk with people outside of your core peer group. Maybe even get out of K-town for awhile. I'm sure the experience would be a beneficial and enlightening one.

Your buddy,

Andy

I actually I haven't owned a TV in a year and a half. I'm just not getting how you can say everyone is either a liberal or a conservative. It seems at odds with your other point, that smart people have a mix of both kinds of views.
