Looks like I'm sorta catering this event.
I think I"m gonna make skull and bone cookies, and maybe some pan de muerto (bread of the dead), but I thought I'd ask if you all know of any funeral foods.
When anyone dies in the south, it seems the person gets a boat load of casseroles. That doesn't sound too fun for a party.

There are tons of variations. Any way you make 'em, they are FABULOUS. Some recipes call for Rice Krispies, but I prefer them without. They also freeze well, so you can make them in advance.
Here's one from cooks.com:
CHEESE STRAWS OR CHEESE COOKIES
4 c. all purpose flour
1 lb. sharp cheddar cheese, grated
1 tsp. salt
3 sticks butter, melted
2 tsp. cayenne pepper
Melt butter. Mix in other ingredients. Roll in small balls and place on cookie sheet. Flatten with a fork, about the size of a fifty cent piece. Bake about 12 minutes at 375 degrees until brown. Do not over cook. These can be put in a cookie press to make cheese straws.

It was the winter of my heart's desire, the spring of my autumnal fancy, the summer of my discontent; all in all, I think it was Monday.
