There's a group I'm involved in that's trying to get the American Psychological Association to stop using psychologists to torture detainees in Guantanamo and the CIA 'black sites'. We've started a petition, and I wanted to invite the community to check it out and sign it:

I know not everyone leans the same way politically here, but I did want to spread the word a bit because I know some of us do agree. The petition's just started, and we're just getting the word out now. If you know anyone who would be interested in signing it, I think there's a link on the site to email the URL to a friend.

Please understand that it is not that I do not care or would not like this to stop but.......

The people doing this have not the slightest interest in what we or say or think on the matter.
Nor do they care about petitions.
As for psychiatrists, they have their own, and anything that the APA wants is irrelevant to them.

These people have their own agenda and the rules that they work with are made by people who consider the people that they are questioning to be less than human and a danger to the their way of life. Notice that I did not say our way of life as you are just as much a danger as the detainees in their eyes. You prove this to them with things like this petition. You are simply not as great a ddanger as you are not actively fighting them just resisting.

They do beleive however that since you are resisting that you have the capability to become a threat.
To support the wogs [the great brown nonchristian masses of the world] is proof of your either your gulability or your desire to help with the downfall of america.

Most of what they do is so well hidden that it soes not and will not come to light.The litle that is found out is mearly an embaresment and not really a threat to their operations.

As I said , I am not am not supporting them. I am just trying to inform you that even if everyone in the u.s. signed the petition it would not stop nor even slow them down.
Their belief in the rightness of what they are doing is so absolute that nothing that we so or say will put an end to it.

Torture & interrogation are 2 different things. Participation in interrogations seems like a good idea. Is he lying? What's his motivation? What approach is going to work best with this individual?

A psychologist is a far better tool in an interrogation than electrodes and batteries, IMO. I don't know what these psychologists are contributing to the process, but there's a higher chance of ethics with that group than with the power tools and hard ware some military or government personnel may be prone to use.

The WW2 vets interviewed on CNN the other day said they got much more info from the German prisoners by playing chess & cards with them... befriending them, building trust, focusing on commonalities. Psychological tactics might be a good way to go.

I'd probably be willing to sign the petition if I had more information on the methodology of the psychological tactics being employed. Do you have any links? The Care2 site doesn't give any information at all. I can't even find the verbiage of the actual petition.

Honestly, for me, the larger issue is that America even has these sites.
