I think that the main reason that the sets at Sanctus are so similiar, that we keep hearing the same things every month, is because it's a monthly event. I believe that if we had a weekly event, the DJs might be more inspired to come up with new things, to keep things lively and fresh.

The fact is, that most every club...especially "goth" clubs...play the "staples"...the ones that they know will get the kids out on the floor. That is the DJ's job. Sure, the club has made it's money on admissions and on drinks, but all the DJ is there for is to play music that will keep the patrons interested, keep them dancing. I've been to a great many different clubs, and I know that the people dance to what they know, what they like. Play something new that they've not heard or aren't terribly familiar with, and the floor empties....and the person who suffers the most from that is the DJ. If the DJ isn't making people dance, people start complaining, and his set gets shortened, or he gets a crap time slot. It's sad, it sucks, but it's how it is. If the majority of the club's population is dancing to what the minority is complaining about, obviously, the minority is going to lose out.

Believe me, I cringe at Sanctus more often than I dance...but I can understand playing Safety Dance...it gets a whole stack of people dancing. I understand 99 Luft Balloons, it gets people dancing....they even play that one in the Atlanta clubs (even if they do stick with the strictly German version). No, they're not particularly "goth" songs, but if the "goth" kids will dance to eighties, new wave, whatever....the DJs will play it. I can't understand Faith, though...that was just bad.

I disagree with a few of the suggestions that..."if we don't like it, don't go". I don't think that's going to solve the problem. If anything, that's going to get us a Knoxville with no "goth" night. If the clubs stop making money on us, they'll start looking for something that is more profitable. I think the solution is....if you're unsatisfied with what you're hearing, become more actively involved in changing that. Make requests, and when the DJs play those songs...get out there and dance. Show the DJs and the crowd that you like that song, and you want to hear more like it. The more that the new stuff gets played, the more it will get recognized, and the more that the crowd will find themselves wanting to dance to it.

I'm not from Knoxville, so I'm certainly no expert on this scene or where it's been....but I did used to come up from Chattanooga to visit The Mercury, and I did live up here for almost two years at the beginning of the new century. I went to the Lava Lounge up until it's demise...and I remember everyone's frustration at the loss of the scene, and desperation to try and rebuild it. If we don't participate in the scene, if we don't get out there and support it....we won't have one. All I'm saying is, that if you're unhappy with something, and bitching about it isn't doing anything but creating pissed off, offended, and defensive people...there are ways to change things.

That's pretty much a joke and a half. While I find things there on occasion, it's mostly a random, accidental import or a used disc somebody foolishly sold. Otherwise, best you're going to find there is Metropolis, and even that's growing a bit stagnant.

Bemusingly, check Hot Topic. Oh, I mock it often and with great joy, but today, I found WTII Records' Resurrection compilation. $9 and some change, music from the 21st century, an act or two which caught me off guard.

I, for one, wouldn't mind hearing a Mogwai tune during Sanctus. At least one of the shorter ones, perhaps Radar Maker. However, I don't know that the rest of the crowd would appreciate that, and as such haven't made the request.

I do see the point of sticking to a thematic line-up. I don't see Safety Dance as thematic, though in my perverted mind, I do see Son of a Preacher Man fitting that criteria.

Really, I suppose all of this is based on personal opinion. Which makes me wonder how people can spend three pages worth of a thread argu^H^H^H^Hdebating over what does and does not belong in a gothic night.

Note: I have to admit that I read these "protest" (or "bitch and whine" or "feedback" or however you'd like to label it this semester) threads simply to see which bands people ask for, so I can skip onto Kazaa and sample the music they're screaming about.

Then, I jot down who has a good taste in music, and actually pay attention to their musical opinions on this message board.

Just wanted to get that out of my system.

Fuck a bunch of this shit. Im my personal experience, if it were about the money and not supporting the "scene" then maybe this shit would pay for part of my rent, or my car. As it stands there have been times that Jason barely even got paid for Sanctus. You have no clue as to what these boys do OUTSIDE of the evening of Sanctus for this "scene". So shut your fucking trap unless you have all of the information.

Three cheers for Karla!!! I may not like all of the songs being played, but I still enjoy going to Sanctus. I will continue to go to Sanctus and support the scene. I appreciate very much the hard work being put forth by the DJ's, moderators, and the admin of KG.
The only complaint I had about this past Sanctus was the bar, and that was not the fault of any of the KG.

Ooh is that right, I know that the door money goes somewhere but anyway that's besides the point. I know that $5 a head for about a hundred people is a pretty good chunck of change, expenses I don't know about but also am not too interested in, if no money was being made then knowbody would be helping with the night. Point being instead of quality there seems to be more attention and effort towards quantity. I think some people would be happy if every frat daddy in town showed up so that they could make more money. Jason said that he was over the whole "goth" scene before this whole thing started up and I was there when he said it. I wasn't mentioning names of who I was quoting to be nice but you obviously know who I am talking about, proving my quote have some accuracy. Oh and by the way, I won't shut the fuck up, I like having an opinion even if it isn't what everyone else agrees with. If people would listen to what the people want and stop having an I don't care what anyone wants attitude then maybe things would be better. Someone made a good point that this is a business and if a service is being provided then opinions and feedback should be expected. I was one of the ones who didn't go to sanctus this time because I am bored with it as well and hope that suggestions will be listened to and taken. I"m sorry YOU feel so offended since your rent isn't being paid by a club night that's what day jobs are for. I know my man has one.

Start a new club night, see exactly how much fun it is to find a venue that will let you do it. Promote it yourself, see how much fun that can be. Do these things while trying to keep a job that will allow you to eat and sleep and drive. The only thing it can do is better "the scene". But what the fuck do I know I am just a silly little hip hop kid that wants to support his friends and be able to have fun on a night or two a month. Put your damn money where your mouth is or SHUT UP. You ALL are giving me a headache. But hey as quoted by many of you ALL hip hop sucks so my opinion must be unimportant.

KGB won't last forever nothing in this town has. I have seen this "scene" lay stagnent before and as sad as it is it will die again if it doesn't progress and people stop comming out. The only thing that keeps the scene in knoxville alive is the cyberspace that this domain exists in. Knoxgothic.com isn't the first and won't be the last that exists. Things will come and go but what really matters is people's opinions and some of them don't count because they are not true to what this lifestyle is all about. As for starting another club night and securing a venue, people in the scene as a whole can't support it as seen in several KGB events. People bitched and complained about Sinister and about the cover charge for the weekly night. Some people did all that they could to appease the patron's complaints by offering a $3 cover and $1-$2 drinks. I have heard bitch, bitch, bitch as well, don't think I haven't but when there was a complaint efforts were made to make the people happy. Alot of people bitched about Fiction where you could get in and get pretty loaded for around $10, Sanctus is a bit more expensive so I feel I can bitch about it since I do spend money there for entertainment purposes. Every time I go to Sanctus I spend a good chunck of change because I tip the bartenders well and support the venue for supporting the scene. If you lose those who do support the scene and the venue then you will lose the night. An unhappy venue and employees = no club night. I have talked to several bartenders from each KGB event and they all have a common complaint, they don't make good tips. The tips at Sanctus average out to the equivilent of a tip from every 4th or 5th person. Now I know some of you will argue that you do in fact tip and that's great but there are some that don't, and that's where my money is. There are at least 3 people in knoxville that think we are a bunch of cheap bastards and aren't afraid to say so.

I love Fred Snyder and the B-52s. Ok, ... I admit it's not very "Goth", but what can I say. I have fun listening to them. I guess I wouldn't request them, though, and expect them to be played at something like a Goth night or a Sanctus, though. Just saying ...

But uhhh.... I live in JC and haven't been to a Sanctus, yet, so I'll keep relatively quiet here.

Might be down at the next one, though. Would've come to this past one, but I had a date that night already and I don't think she would've been up for going to K'ville.

I think Candicide brings up a good point in that what is played by the DJ's at Sanctus are the things they know will go over well. If we could keep a weekly night going, maybe the DJ's would feel more comfortable experimenting with different bands.

Since everyone is looking at this as a service, maybe you should consider that many times how crowded the dancefloor is, is the only feedback of any kind the DJs get (and without them, it's just a bar). If they see it flooded with moving bodies, they know they're doing a good job and vice versa. Badgering them on the board will do very little good because when it comes down to it, more people are dancing to the staples than to what you requested. Also realize that if this were any other kind of service, a vast majority of you would have been removed from the premises because of your volatile tone. I'm not saying no one can have an opinion, but just because you have one doesn't mean you have to express it obnoxiously. Believe it or not, the DJ's do have feelings and some of those feelings are connected to how they do their job. I wonder how some of you would react if other people came into your work and basically told you that the way you do things sucks and then proceded to ramble on about how awful of an employee you are for the next 15 minutes. Yeah, you can say it doesn't hurt your feelings but we all like to feel competent. Some of you would do well to remember that.

That's my rant and I refuse to look at this thread, or any future threads rehashing the same ol' shit, again.
