Hm. Science fiction and fantasy appears to be popular on this board. I've dabbled a bit into science fiction, dug it a little, but I got my start in literature with fantasy, which is still a guilty pleasure. Someone mentioned C.S. Friedman's Coldfire Trilogy a moment ago; I particularly enjoyed that series, which was an interesting mixture of both genres, although I didn't particularly care for Crown of Shadows.

Anyway, back to the subject at hand. I'm currently reading Soviet Foreign Policy After World War II, by Alvin Rubinstein, and Niccolo Machiavelli's classic The Prince. It's my second go-round with ol' Nicc; as with Sun Tzu, I can read his little lifestyle hintbooks over and over.

I'm reading Under the Black Flag: the Romance and the Reality of Life Among the Pirates by David Cordingly. It's a nonfiction exploration of what the origins of the modern "pirate" archetype were. So far it's totally engrossing.

I just finished Case Closed by Patricia Cornwell. It is a nonfiction book about Jack the Ripper. Cornwell presents forensic evidence that would have brought forth murder charges had the technology been available at the time. It is a good read, but be warned the pictuers are disturbing.
Prior to that I read Zodiac Unmasked about the Zodiac killer. It is a similar exposee. The cases are eerily similar. Zodiac was a slick mother.
It's too bad neither criminal was ever brought to justice, but its makes for interesting reading material if you are into the true crime genre.

I really liked Case Closed too, but I didn't finish it, because after 3/4 of the book, I was more than convinced that she was right about who she says was Jack. Some of the coincidences are uncanny, I wonder why no one made all her connections before. I'd like to see another Ripper expert challenge her theories, just to see if maybe she was wrong on anything. It was funny, I had images from "From Hell" in my head throughout reading it...(not that this was a bad thing ;)

The Zodiac book you mention I own but haven't read it yet. I did a report on him for a crime class I took. Interesting fellow.

I love true crime. Any other fans?

I'm reading The Years of Rice and Salt, by Kim Stanley Robinson. So far it seems to be an alternate history of what would happen if western culture had been obliterated by the Black Plague and instead Indian and Chinese culture had been the predominant surviving peoples. It follows a group of "souls" through generations of reincarnations. Interesting so far, but some elements of the writer's style are annoying to me.

Yeah I've read a few of KSR's alternative future/past books like The Wild Shore, and his style is a bit hard to get used to...

Currently reading the Harry Potter books, mainly out of boredom and something new to read. Books are becoming quite expensive nowadays, tho on my list to read soon are the new Jack Ryan, Sword of Truth and Shannara books...

Just finished The Coming of the Quantum Cats and have started Home Coming both by Fredrick Phol. Yes a little dated but interesting stuff. A little dissapointed by the ending of the cats but hes always a "end in a wimper instead ofa bang" type guy.

Master and Commander by Patrick O'Brien. Strange writing style, but full of enough homoerotic undertones to keep me gigglingly reading.
