"Goth" Goth "pulling goth my hair out"
alright- i see a bunch of locked threads here.
I think there's a moderator or two who get just as carried away as myself and other flamers.
btw-the "Goth Grocery Shopping" was a "make fun of goth everything events" idea i had weeks ago.
I snapped at Cup a Joes about how rediculous it is to put "goth" in front of everything.
A few days later me and some friends went to krogers and took tons of pics. While we were standing in line there was a dude behind us whispering to his girlfriend 'light as a feather.
She replied 'stop it'
He continues 'this isn't salem!'
So "goth" prejudice does exist.
Anyhow, man-the pictures are HILARIOUS!
(Me shopping for shampoo.heh.
Cassandra buying a black 'parasol'
Black hair dye, etc.)
I'll try to get them up somewhere.
So now i'm having a god damn goth identity crisis.
Will somebody please-PLEASE-explain what "goth" is?
Because i'm not sure i really understand.
Although there are a FEW people who i know can set me straight.
So yeah-what is goth?
What makes you goth?
5 fave goth bands inb ten seconds?
(*nods to zeo)
ANYONE-please explain goth...

As for a Big Goth Definition - what do I know? I just like wearing too much makeup and flailing my arms all around while I dance.

Yeah... thats about right.

The interesting thing about the term "Goth" is, that its original association is with, as the dictionary highlights, a "barbarous" group of people. Though, of course, they were "barbarians" to the Roman perspective and since most of our culture (or I mean, Anglo-American culture) descends from Roman culture, then we consider them "barbarians" as well.
The modern Gothic movement is really an extension of the spread of Germanic culture throughout the 19th, 20th, and now 21st centuries. It was Germanic culture's influence that has really created the alleged "loosening" of Western values. Germanic culture has always stressed equality, dynamicism, freedom, and ferocity. Roman culture on the other hand is hierarchical, conservative, reasoned, and ordered. Of course, the actual term Gothic, I believe, has to originate from the architecture and its dark feeling. Though, it does seem kinda strange that as far as culture goes, we are the radicals, more in line with Germanic cultures than conservative Roman culture.
So, yes, it's no surprise that Gothic sub-culture in the modern world does shock the more conservative elements of society. Its a move away from traditional Roman values into those "barbaric" Germanic values.

Maybe its not something you can call your self its a catigory title (the joke when you ask a goth if its a goth it says no). Its like rebel, terorist, poser,.... its not something you call yourself (for you its just what you do) but is imposed by others so you can be defined properly. We should stop using the word goth and instead use gothic (as in the page title), that way we nolonger have to worry about what is goth and instead ca just injoy all the gothic substance in our lives
