What are some of your favorite instances though out history that has been caused by the sheer fact that society is some times enthralled by revelling in its own stupidity?

I can think of several.....witch trial, prohibition, the McCarthy era. I think the worst has to be racial segregation. It's embarrassing to know we as a country were ever closeminded. It is unfathomable. What the hell was everyone thinking?
