OH OH OH I almost forgot Torch_32's comment about those crucified carrying the cross tie but not the cross? that was actually touched on in the film....the theives carry their cross ties only....but Christ carries the entire cross..............OK Ill shut up for a while

Okay my 2 cents

First off the movie is 85% based of the writing of Two Nunes one from the 13th and one from the 16th century, and people saying it takes from several referances.....well any time you tell a bible story it automaticly cross ref several sources.

Second He IS trying to force his religion on others, MANY churches recieved special previews that also included instructions on how to get, make, insnare converts during, after and outside this movie (when I went to see LOTR i recived no special instruction on how to get people to join Salrons army)

For all the trouble he went through with the language, he got it wrong (Greek was the base language of the time, used by the romans and others when in different lands (like a common tounge you might say)

Is this the biggest movie of our time, well thats up to the people...Is it the best movie of our time...no.. Its not even a good version of this story.

Actually, Aramaic and Latin would have been the tongues spoken. Greek wasn't a common tongue, per se, except among the very-well educated who either wanted to study Greek scholars or "put on airs."

Also, i'm working on a jesus movie......because i've always been an action film fan, and i've always thought it would be funny to see Ahhhnold as jesus....so i am doing a flash animation (been working on it for a while now actually)

crucifixion......it doesnt matter if you are tied by your wrists, nailed through your palms or hands......in that formation......you suffocate...the rib cage is stretched and the disphragm cannot support.....little known fact but true.

just a little more info...the actually final blow in your everyday crucifixion is to the legs. (this is done by the romans, after they torture you extensively and decide to go ahead and kill you) break the legs and there is no longer any body support. so all of the weight is on the ribcage.

I don't buy the stuff about the hands not being able to support the body's weight. I've skinned and butchered quite a few animals. Skin, muscle and tendons are a lot tougher than you might think. Unless Jesus was a fatass, I think a nail through each hand would have easily supported his weight.

I remember the guy who carried the cross with a wheel on it. He was carrying it across America. I don't know if he made it all the way. He told the interviewer that he put the wheel on it because the end of it was wearing down and the cross would get too short.

I'm not too interested in seeing this movie. I would be more interested in learning the story of Hank:

This film seems like a nice torture flick to me. I will probably rent it,either that, or what for it to be on Stars or HBO.

I was always lead to believeas a child that Jesus was white , never questioned God, was never tempted, wore shoes all the time, and only had long hair because they didn't have any scizors then. Now as an adult I realize this was all made up... (ex. he did sin,he didn't always wear shoes, they did have means of cutting ones hair...) So now days I tend to take what people say about Jesus with a grain of salt. I believe all people have different ideas of God,Christ,Budda,Gods,Cottage Cheese,...whatever, and that we or people who believe in anything, make our idols into whatever we want, based on our own perception. (Kermit the frog thinks,christ is green) So I am sure some think he carried the whole cross,other's think just the cross bar,others think he strutted with the cross...etc.al. But, to me...I wasn't there, so I don't really know. I hardly believe what the media and social studies books say about the times of today, especially since our government does indeed have say in what the press writes about. (Exp. Reporters in the war with Saddam censored)

So with that being said...how was the bible not censored through the ages, in order to reflect the leaders of that time? I don't think government censorship is a new thing, I'm pretty sure it has been around for awhile. So,how much of the Bible can you really believe in since it has definately been subject to censorship and rewritings and changing over the years? If people had the very first Bible every made,the original draft....who is to say it did not get censored by the writer who wrote it? Or maybe by the teacher who taught the writer to write? If Gods voice came to several different people in order to make the bible, who's to say they all didn't have different things to say? Different veiws/ways of percieving God's words?

I know if I tell one person one story,and another person the story,and yet another the same story,I will have three different stories in the long run. Because we, as humans, all percieve things differently and learn at our own paces. So imagine if the people who recieved messages from God to send to the people,yet, had to get someone else to write it, because they could not write themselves, Imagine how their story probably got twisted around. (Don't even get me started on language barriers and translations) Just imagine this a well, if Someone writes a peom, story, or song, do we as the viewers,readers,listeners not all have our own opinions as to what the work in mention truely means?

When I believe in a higher power/powers. I call it my faith. I believe the things mentioned created this world and alot others. And I can see where a God/Goddess/Gods/Goddess's might send one of their own here as a means of truely knowing our pain,happiness,whatever. But, do I have actual proof that they exist? In my head yes...but,that is all. I could not prove to anyone here that my divinity does exist, nor would I try. But, to me, it is real. I do not know exactlt what it is, but, it is my secrurity blanket. My last hope when all looks to be the end or something seems unexplainable or I just need to feel loved. Is it wrong? Maybe to some...but,it works for me.

I really just want to state that I have no faith in the Bible or dug up relics from biblical times. I know that censorship has always been the ways of leaders in order to calm the peasants and to make themselves appear not as blasphemous as they really are. Therefore, I just want people to think about what religions teach, soak it in for what it is worth to you, and then do what you feel is right for you.




Bone, I'm still waiting to become that Reverend... Maybe take some classes on religion or something.

i'm a little bit dubious about this film. The fact that Rabbis from both the Conservative and Reform congregations in town expressed that they percieved anti-Semitism in the film makes me feel that there is a good chance that anti-Semitic beliefs are present. However, i love anything that gets this many people thinking and talking about things. So, i'm gonna go see the movie once the crowds have thinned and come up with a real live opinion of my very own at that point.

There is one point that i feel pretty safe in making right now though, as it is an in-general-pertaining-to-the-subject point, rather than something specific to the movie. A few people on here have already done a good job on presenting how it was the Romans rather than the Jews that killed Jesus using bible based arguments for their points of reference. However, you do not need to touch the bible to show that it was the Romans. You simply need to have some basic knowledge of history and/or anthropology. Crucifixion is a Roman method of execution, not a Jewish method. Therefore, the Romans did it. If it was done by the Jews then chances are they would have used an execution method that was actually part of their culture and punishment system such as stoning. Saying that the Jews during that time period were crucifying someone makes about as much sense as trying to make a claim that the Spanish Inquisition was in the habit of using the electric chair when they were torturing someone to death.

The Jews did kill Jesus in the sense that they made/let it happen. They were paid off by the Romans. It tells you that in the buybull.

THe Jews and the Pahrisees could not condemn jesus to death by lawthat is why they handed him over to the romans. Nowhere in the film does it even insinuate that the Jews killed christ.....HOWEVER,, he was handed over to the romans who could not find fault in him to condemn him to death...........

I hope that this is a good movie. Unfortunately, many religious films are little more than message movies, backed by religious organizations, for the religious community. Examples are the Time Changer and the Left Behind films. This is not always the case. A good religious film should be a good movie first, and a thought provoking vehicle second. This allows a wider audience and a broader scope of discussion of the themes. I hope this will prove to be one of those movies. Other religious (xian) movies that are worth viewing (please add to this list any other recommendations)

1. Agnes of God - Nice twist Very overlooked film.
2. Last Temptation of Christ - As mentioned before, an amazing, thought provoking film that is NOT about Jesus fucking as many who protested yet never swa the film assume.
3. Ten Commandments - A FUCKING HOOT!!! I watch this at least once a year. How the Jewish community can be up in arms about Mel's movie and yet be OK with the bitching, howling, mob of assholes that whine at Moses at every turn and embrace Dathan at every impasse is beyond me! And it's gothic too! Well, it DOES have Vincent Price in it.
4. Life of Brian - More social commentary than a parody of christ, who is never actually insulted or parodied in this film.
5. Jaccob's Ladder - More a film about letting go than christianity per se, but enlightening and thought provoking.
6. Dogma - OK, it is a Kevin Smith film, so dick and fart jokes abound, but the movie raises so many good questions and issues, it really should be seen and discussed.
7. OK I don't remember the name of this one, but making this list has made me think about it. It concerns a woman whose life has bee filled with drugs and promiscuity. She joins a doomsday cult that preaches the coming apocalypse. She meets a man who tries to bring her to her senses and does just as...Seemed like a good movie at the time, late 80's I think. Anyone else seen this? Ack, I'm rambling. See you at the movies.

Personally....I have no faith.

None.

And yes sometimes it is a lonely place. I have no security blanket of a higher power watching me...loving me.

But what I do have is family.

I have REAL people, people that love me, that are there for me. They will cry with me, help me when I need it, smile at me, and give me all the love their hearts can offer. I say this to no one in particular, but so much time is wasted on God......instead of going to church on Sunday, go to the park with your family, play hop scocth with your kids, walk you dog, call a long lost friend...spread some love to those that need it...if there is a God, don't you think he would appreciate that a lot more?

This is the faith I live with......I send out love and I receive it in return, as much as my agoraphobic self will allow.

But I need no higher power than knowing I love and I am loved, if even by one person.

I find it strange that Jesus stirs such controversy.....especially when I have a feeling that all he felt was love. Love of his family.

I would do anything for love, unfortunately that backfires sometimes, as Mother MO has seen...but I love to love,

So perhaps I do have a faith.....My faith is love.

I could write a three page post, but I'll keep it short and sweet.

I find it interesting that after all of these posts, it appears that only one of you has even seen the film.

I saw it. We had tickets reserved for two weeks.

Regardless of what you believe, or what limited information your viewpoint stems from, it is a very Catholic version of the passion (suffering) of Christ, based largely on the paintings and depictions of post-Heliand Christianity.

My only advice right now: PARENTS- see the movie first before bringing your children. Many parents were in the theater with me, assuming that their children needed to see the "real" story of their savior.

The children behind me were crying and horrified. This is an adult film, and an adult rendition of the possible last 12 hours of Jesus' life. It contains one of the most graphic scenes I have ever watched, and I saw grown men turn their head.

My opinion I will reserve until later. Perhaps.

Anyway, I thought that we were discussing the controversy surrounding the film as well as questions/views on religion in general and religion as portrayed in the movies. I don't think anyone here has given a review to a movie they have not yet seen.
