tiffany and co.

If it's not covered by one of those other categories, you should probably talk about it here. Be nice.

tiffany and co.

Post by gwenhwyfar »

OH MY GOD! the company i work for is having a special private show on monday for some big wigs in the jewelry industry. i have been moving pricey priority pieces all night. not just any pieces, big pimping, bling bling pieces. turns out some of the pieces will be going to harry winston of tiffany's in ny. i had a ring on my hand earlier that was over $98,000.00 cost  ( cost is what the co. pays for it before they jack it up for retail). cost is usually half the retail value. thats nearly $200,000.00 on my hand today! that was just one ring, i had a tray full of sapphires, rubies, diamonds. all worth an insane grand total amount of money that i prolly shouldn't post online. i'm currently waiting for them to finish with them in imaging and i just had to post about it. days like today are why i love my job! :D

Now when you're knocking over a jewelry store, those guys are insured up the ass...they know not to give any crap. If someone does, you take the butt of your gun and smack em in the face...they all tend to shut up then....if it's a manger however, you cut off his index finger- they know better,.....tell him his middle finger is next...he'll tell you anything you want to know.

i mean......ummm i like carrots?

You know that ring is Brittney Spears next birthday present to herself. *grin*

Amazing the value us humans place on rocks.

Diamonds are made from the most plentiful substance on earth, yet the cartel and abuses of the diamond miners of these boring sparklies puts a shit-ton of money in some rich man's pocket.

To my future husband-don't dare buy me a diamond. I'll pawn it for a dishwasher and power tools. I'll be happy with some silver and garnets...

Before you fall for that " a diamond is forever" horseshit, read about the children getting their arms amputated, etc...

Now I had not heard this end of the diamond industry. I have heard the dirty DeBeers story ......basically they own it all, every last stone. every year they let out the BOTTOM TEN PERCENT of what diamondare in the debeers vaults. Im not a big wishy washy diamond girl...but I have seen ugly rocks of diamond and I have seen beautifull colorless Harry Winston Diamonds like i saw today. I also know the process of how they get sold.
DeBeers lets out the bottom 10 percent (which is A LOT)
there are about 10 dealers of theis 10 percent around the world.....mostly of the Jewish Diamond community..
You are handed a bag of diamonds....told the price and thats what you will pay, no haggling or bartering over quality....if you do......you wont so much as buy a Cubic Zirconia in a pawn shop ANYWHERE!
Of course some solitares are sold alone, but the mojority is in bulk.
You cant make money as a Genologist unless you live in New York in the Jewish Gem community......(I researched with jewlers here....concensus was resounding) I was thinking of Gemology and jewelers school........Yes its a Racket. Yes its a fad. Yes, the value of diamonds is absurd (you should see some of the shit jewelry we sell for so much). and yes..........the value of diamonds is in the hands of one family and controled by how many are released to the public each year

HOWEVER!!!!!!!!!
http://jewelry.about.com/cs/syntheticdiamonds/

Last year a lab here in america, successfully grew up to 3 carat diamonds in a lab.......................for less than 3 dollars a carat.......this could crash the value of diamonds............

This "ring" also passed through my hands and, quite frankly, I don't see what the big deal is all about. It's not that any of us mere mortals will actually ever own a bauble like that NOR have the 6 digit wallet that it's gonna cost to buy it. People like me will never SEE that kind of money in one place in my life! That's my house and a couple of nice cars! My point being; Why make such a fuss over something that will never be a part of your reality? Pardon me for saying but it really makes one seem quite materialistic and shallow. Anyone looking would get the idea that "things" are most important in your life. Why is it no one ever gets that excited when it's time to do someone a favor or help someone in need out? I understand wanting something, we all do, but I was absolutely DISGUSTED by the amount of people that came in drooling over this rock set in gold. I mean they go all silly over an inanimate object. Who CARES if it might go on Britney's finger or not? All of a sudden "bigwigs" get special treatment while the rest of us "nobody's" get pushed to the side. Most of the people that came shambling into our little hole of a work area never set foot back there. They DEFINETLY don't give s $#!+!! about what we actually DO back in our closet of a work space. NONE of them even bothered to introduce themselves and more than half of them didn't even know my name. Not even a "Hello." All they cared about was the "ring". I thought I was in the 4th LOTR movie and Gollum came back from the dead. They got their look, had a quick fantasy, orgasm, and left. "Who the F**K was that?" I kept getting asked and all I could say was "I don't have a clue". And people wonder why I keep losing faith in humanity.

I know your name......I just feel weird whenever I walk in your closet.

Your coworkers are weird.

Well personally.......I wasn't amazed at the amount of money it was worth....... I was more impressed by the beautiful diamonds around it that the stone .......I ve never seen that qualtiy, not at the place I work. I get to play in that stuff all day. In fact I go to the "high end room" every day.....and Im used to it.......not that much astounds me anymore...then again I see the same thing you shoot....I am really amazed at how low quality things sell for so much........Diamond solitares that look like smashed glass selling for more than Ill ever see...I saw some of the peices that went with that ring for the VIP show. Higher quality of stones than we ever carry.........quality is everything.........your right, though. If I HAD the money, I still wouldnt buy it. What the hell would I do with something like that. I guess I was entranced by the quality But I started at that company in gemstones only....I loved it so much......money wasnt an issue.......beauty was. Quality is everything.
.Ive seen $10,000 necklaces..........filled with shitty diamonds. I have NEVER seen quality like that.
on the other hand.......sorry people were rude to you. I should have said hi but I felt uncomfortable even being in there.........you probably know why.

Hmmm I guess people gettin excited over the value of jewelry might be the equivelent of getting excited over a peice of couture fashion, like a dolce and gabbana dress or something.........which I get excited over neither.......well I have a D&G corset....btu I get excited over that for a much different reason.

BTW.......you guys do work wonders back there....I am amazed at how you make some peices look so nice , and they look like crap in the warehouse.

GE (General Electric) has a process in which crappy diamonds are heat treated to make them not crappy diamonds.
http://www.diamonds-diamonds.info/tutorial_treated.asp

GE also had a process in Chicago in the mid 90's but I can't find any info on it. They took trash from garbage dumps and used a process similar to the above link. Well exactly the same as the above link and made diamonds from scratch. I'm only assuming that the process above was derived from the garbage to diamonds trade.

two companies making synthetic diamonds:
http://www.gemesis.com
http://www.apollodiamond.com

apollo, as I recall, is slowly growing them in large wafers... putting research into diamond computer processors that can handle heat and speed much higher than silicon.

those companies were listed in the links I put up before. I have seen the irradiated diamonds ........I havent seen diamond that are heated from brown to bwhite, but I have seen ones that were ugly , and heathed from whatever color they were to black, or a dark blue........sometimes a sienna........

IIRC from my jeweler's training that can be done in a furnace or under a torch with a skilled hand.

Diamonds dont have to be removed from their setting to be sodered but will explode or burn under the 'wrong' heating conditions.

goddamn! i'm not materialistic or shallow. i just think its cool when a rediculously high end piece comes through and i get to play with it( especially considering it may be going to tiffany's, where as i would prolly never even set eyes on it in my own reality. because i doubt i will ever accumulate the much money, and if i did, i wouldn't spend it on shit like that. but i'm a girl, dammit. i like to play dress up.

I am not shallow or materialistic either.......I dont hardly wear jewelry at all.....In fact neither does Gwen. But I am not posting this to justify..I think that is a bit presumtuous to call one materialistic or shallow for being interested in a peice of jewelry. I saw a cruise ship once in Miami. Gawked and was in awe of how big it was. Does that make me envious or shallow becasue I admired a cruise ship. NO. DO I long for the luxury and money it takes to get on one or the treatmetn that you get on one? NO.Just never seen one before. Just like I never seen 98,000 dollars, or beautiful natural clear diamonds like that. But you work for a company that deals gemstones and jewelry, sometimes rediculously expesive gemstones and jewelry. THats the company you work for .......thats "the man", to you.

ANd by the way, I said hi to you in the hall at work today and you didnt hardly so much as give me the time of day. Im not trying to start trouble, but Im not your enemy either. Dont let something as stupid as a thread on a message board keep you from being friends with other people.
