Okay this is finally out the reviews seem to be 50-50 right now with everyone agreeing that even if the movie isnt great Depp dose a great job again.

(I posted this review at the Rotten Tomatoes forum on Monday night.)

I just saw a sneak preview of Secret Window tonite. I'll tell you a little bit about it. This is not a spoiler. So don't worry.

This is a stretch for Stephen King. Instead of a story about a writer in Maine, it's a story of a writer in upstate New York! Whoa! I think he's working his way west! Anyway, Johnny Depp is a writer, Mort, who caught his wife in bed with another man. So he's going through a divorce and has secluded himself in a remote lakehouse to try and get some work done. A creepy guy from Mississippi, Mr. Shooter, shows up and accuses him of stealing one of his short stories. From there, the suspense builds as Shooter harasses Mort. This is the basic outline of the movie. How does Mort deal with this sinister guy? Go to the cops? Get help from friends? His estranged wife? It goes from there.

I noticed at the sneak preview that there were several young girls. It occured to me that many of the people in the audience were there to see Johnny Depp. I never saw Pirates of the Caribbean. But I'm sure plenty of people were there to see more of the cute guy. He did a good job. The muttering eccentric author he portrayed reminded me a little bit of his role in Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas.

All of the actors did a good job. The production, cimetography, music, etc., was all very well done. If you like mystery/suspense movies, you'll enjoy it. It is not a horror movie and has minimal gore. If you've seen many of these sorts of movies, you will probably realize what's going on thirty minutes or so into the film. It does not have surprises or difficult concepts for viewers to absorb. Although I'm not a die-hard Stephen King fan, I've read several of his books. If you are a big Stephen King fan, GO SEE THIS MOVIE. I think you will enjoy it.

And if you're reading this, Stephen, I just wanna let yew know that I live in Tennessee. And ah don' take kindly to you makin' all us hillbilly folk look bad. In faect, ah think yew stole this here story from me! Yeah, that's right, boy! I'm comin' ta git yew! Haw!

SPOILERS BELOW:

Fight Club meets The Shining in Cape Fear. I could have sworn I saw this plot in an episode of Outer Limits, Tales From the Crypt, or another similar show. Unless you are die-hard Johnny Depp fan, you can wait for the DVD rental. A good date movie, perhaps. It has a corny ending. *rimshot*

As much as I like Stephen King, I still can't forgive him for that television mini-series of "The Shining". ugh... but I do kind of want to see this.

Good analogy, that pretty much sums it up. The story just didn't seem very original. I went to see it last night. At first I was kind of disappointed to see Johnny's character as such a push-over, but it all makes since in the end. Nice twist as well.
The end is definitely "corny" though, heh. (pun)
It was about as good, maybe a bit better than I had expected, but I would still recommend waiting to see it on DVD as well, unless you are a huge Johnny Depp fan.

Since I have not read the story (so sue me), I cannot comment on how closely it followed King's tale.

I enjoyed it. I got a kick out of counting the number of times Doritos show up as product placement...

All in all, I liked it, not just because of Depp. He hit the quirky writer dead on.

Actually they changed the ending for the movie...and it's a much better ending in my opinion. go figure.

Dark Half....he wrote the same damn concept in Dark Half.

thats what I thought when I read it I was never shure wich came out first though, so he could have written secret window then decided to expand it into a full novel, not sure.

I didnt like it :-(

Depp dose a great job but cant save it. And changing the ending.... was that ment as a joke. Besides mort (hehe more name games) was there any character that was even remotly likable?
