This thread was started to educate our baby Coor (and other younguns) on the 80's. Now since I am a trivia WHORE, I will start.

pick something and explain it and why is was signifigant to the 80's ....(short please I have ADD)

or make a list of things that were important.

So since we have covered Morrisey and Morrison ( If you need clearer explanation of that...... :google:

Lunchboxes used to be metal...and much cooler, with an astounding variety to choose from...It was the most important choice you had to make while "school shopping" in elementary school.

Metal lunchboxes were a good thing. I've got a nice metal one with an absinthe advertisement on it. Somethings just rock.

I though Michael Jackson, Prince, and Madonna were locked in a titanic struggle for control of the 80s.

Don't forget the ripped clothing period...when everyone had to buy a pair of jeans and pay 300 dollars to have them professionally ripped. I'm still not sure why?

I'll agree with that!

Madonna used to make really public friendly pop music......then one day she made a contraversial for Pepsi (the "like a Prayer" video......where she burned a coupla crosses....got it on with a ablack Jesus.......and was healed at a gospel choir....all in her negleje negligend rosary!) It was only in the 90s that her music went very "clubby" and experimental

Madonna also started a trend of many belts.......thats right we all used to dance around and wear up around 10 belts....just slung around the waist....

Watch Freaks and Geeks. Seemed more like my Jr High time, but a lot about that show hits very close to home. Never got to enjoy on tv except for the final epesode, but the dvd collection is available now.

I knew about Lennon, and I think I saw Ferris Bueler's Day off. Wasn't that the last film the chick from Dirty Dancing did? Legwarmers scared me.

OK so why did they wear their shirts half on the should. No like a cute off the should think, but like half way down their arm? I've yet to understand that.

Are you telling me that there was no Say What Karoke, Newlyweds, Osbournes, Tail Daters, Real World, Road Rules, Real World/Road Rules Challenge? Are you saying that there is no Made, make me famous, jackass, viva la bam, or fear?

Wow this 80's that you speak of was an odd time. I mean you can just watch videos on MTV, not MTV/videos/don't suc_home online. :shock:

Heh, those were the days when hair height measured coolness...I miss having tall hair sometimes, when you had to duck to get through the doorway, you knew you were cool....

Ahh, MTV did have a few shows. Let's not forgot MTV's first game show, Remote Control.

We had Remote Control, and we liked it.

There was none of this other crap that you mentioned above that sucks mightly (though I've heard the Osbournes can be amusing).

There was music, and videos, and lo' it was good (and not all the same five rap videos over and over again)

In Orlando, we wore Ron Jon's and Ocean Pacific clothing a lot.

I remember thinking that A-Ha's "Take on Me" was the coolest video, EVER.

Fashion inspired by "Fame" and "Miami Vice."

Playing "Burger Time" on my intellivision set.

HBO was still entertaining.

Boy George.

George Michael was straight.

And "Where's the Beef?" was still funny.

Kennedy was in the early 90's.

I was looking it up to see if I was right (1992 she started) and learned that J.J. Jackson had died...I was too young to really remember him...
but I do remember Downtown Julie Brown and Adam Curry.

And Coor, "Video Killed The Radio Star" by the Buggles (sp?) was the first video to air.

It never went away. Hip Hop came into Mainstream exceptance in the 80's thanks to artists like Grandmaster Flash and the Furious 5, Run DMC, LL Kool J, Beastie Boys, Afrikaa Babbaata and the Zulu Nation, and Rock Steady Crew. and Films like Breakin, Krush Groove, Beat Street and others. if you want a good history of Hip hop including the 80's watch Scratch.

Not to be terribly informative or anything, but Breakdancing made it's debut in NYC in the seventies. Coincidentally it was developed directly after the first Capoirista (SP?) came to the US. Breakdancing is essentially a non interactive variation on Capoiera, which is a dance/fighting form developped by African slaves in Brazil. If you are at all interested in knowing more about this, I HIGHLY recommend it, course I LOVE Capoiera.

Don't forget that the cartoons then were not all remakes of cartoons or incredibly idiotic drivel (Ed, Edd, and Eddy springs to mind on idiotic drivel).

Voltron, thundercats, spider-man, GI-joe, he-man, transformers.

All those came from another era...and got remade in modern times
