I"m a bit late but I'll ask.
Are the electricals on ENglish cars as bad as I've heard?
The saying that comes to mind is this: "They'd rather spend time glueing wood to the dash than getting the electricals sorted out."
My old Jeep had some bad electricals but well it had been through about 10 owners all of which hodge podged what the prevous owner did so I pulled it all and redid.

There is no replacement for displacement.

Heh, I posted this reply on the NG boards when you asked it there, I had honestly forgotten I'd posted this here!
here's the reply (I am NOT typing all this again!)
copy/paste:
Well, if it's older than say 1987, then the chances that you will have 'quirky' electronics in a Jaguar is pretty good. You can thank Lucas Electrical for that one, they are the company that did all of the electronics in pre-Ford era Jaguars.
The thing about it is though, that it really isn't Lucas's fault, from what I understand. The thing about British autos is that they were under regulation from the British government for a long time (I am not sure if they still are, I doubt it) so that they couldn't use synthetic rubber in their components. Because of this, the parts would deteriorate faster than in cars that used synthetic. Again, this is just what I understand about recent history British auto manufacture and I could be mistaken, but I think I remember reading that somewhere reputable.
That being said, if you get an older Jaguar and take care of the major components that use rubber or plastic in their construction like the electronic relays, seals, gaskets, etc. and replace them with more recently manufactured parts then you'll have a much more dependable car on your hands.
When we got the '88 it had already had most, if not all, of the major headaches taken care of. Otherwise we wouldn't have gone near it. Plus, Greyeyes' father knows a guy that just works on Jags...and he works for very reasonable prices (much cheaper than the local dealer).
The engine is a different story though. Jaguar engines are really good engines.....and powerful.
