Whore, Harlot, Wench, Slut, Fallen Woman, Skank

Post by JaNell »

The other day a friend jokingly called me a harlot. No problem. "Harlot", to me, has very few negative connotations. Harlots are smart, funny, sensual, sexual, free of the bonds of male imposed mores, if not of actual bondage gear, have their own personal power, and are invited to all the best parties...

So, definitions, and confessions?

There is the name of Bear's motorcycle. It is a Virago.

Considering the definition of the word, it is rather ironic.

harlot was most commonly used historicly by upper class people describing the women they wish they were. thats how i always viewed it.
or maybe its just me.

Hmmm....

NOUN: A woman prostitute.
ETYMOLOGY: Middle English, vagabond, rogue, lecher, harlot, from Old French arlot, herlot, vagabond.
OTHER FORMS: harlot·ry (-l-tr) —NOUN

WORD HISTORY: The word harlot nowadays refers to a particular kind of woman, but interestingly it used to refer to a particular kind of man. The word is first recorded in English in a work written around the beginning of the 13th century, meaning “a man of no fixed occupation, vagabond, beggar,” and soon afterwards meant “male lecher.” Already in the 14th century it appears as a deprecatory word for a woman, though exactly how this meaning developed from the male sense is not clear. For a time the word could also refer to a juggler or jester of either sex, but by the close of the 17th century its usage referring to males had disappeared.

Hey!... that means I can really be called a harlot myself!! Ha! Joy!

You know as long as I could ever remember I have always used the word wench in a positive way. I really don't understand why anyone would take offence to this word unless it was used harshly...

Wench was a derivitave word from the medeival era.

Wench= beautiful maiden
In which turn it has come to my liking.
If any (sp) please forgive me.

Sence I have not been here long enough I do not understand how you replied to me in highlights...so I am going to be old fashion and just write what you wrote....

Could you imagine the possibilities women could have had back then if they had "wench's grape juice"? It would have been an extremely intriguing time for them....

But then, they did have wines. So I guess they made up for it.

But if anything it would make a nice commerical... Wench's grape juice, Jucie for only for beatuiful women.......or something along those lines.

It is about you, Nem, you slutty slut slut!

IMO:

"Wench" always makes me think of an overblown, sloppy drunk who doesn't know or care whose hands are in her cleavage - but that's just my connotation.

"Whore" means doing it for money, period.

"Slut" just does it whenever asked nicely.

With a "Skank", you're gonna get drama and disease and he/she probably gets into sex-related fights, and wears tight tacky clothes, and is slightly stupid...

Anywho.

There is always the classic "serving wench".

That is, what you would call a waitress in the 13th century if you were hip, or what you would refer to your waitress as now, if you wanted your meal served to you hot, steaming, and on your head.

"Whore" means doing it for money, period.

How else does one afford condoms?
