The Woody Guthrie estate tried to sure JibJab and Atom Films over the use of the song "This Land" in the parody. The lawsuit was dropped when it was proven that the song is now in the public domain. Copyrights begin when a work is first published, and the estate tried to renew it after the original had expired.
